Today, Vermont’s home production is principally producing large, expensive single-family homes on large and mid-size lots, and large-scale multi-family apartments. Vermonters looking for housing options in-between, like a duplex or four-plex, cooperative housing, senior housing units, age-friendly homes, or townhouse condominium—commonly referred to as Missing Middle Housing—have very limited options. In this final lecture of the spring speaker series, we’ll explore key state-level policy and initiatives to deliver missing middle and infill housing solutions to communities across Vermont. Then, we’ll dive into one innovative project, Homes for All: A ‘Design & Do’ Toolkit for Small-scale Home Builders, Investors & Community Leaders. The Toolkit, which includes a Builders’ Workbook, Missing Middle Homes Design Guide, and five VT Neighborhood Infill Case Studies, is chock-full of resources for emerging and aspiring small-scale developers and local housing champions—learn how the Toolkit can help you create and support diverse, affordable housing options for all Vermonters.
