DESCRIPTION:Vermont’s remarkable Civil War battlefield record is well documented\, But little is known of how Vermont women sustained the home front. \nWith nearly 35\,000 of the state’s able-bodied men at war\, the monumental tasks of keeping more than 30\,000 farms in operation became very much a female enterprise. And women took the place of men in factories and worked after hours making items needed by the soldiers. \nVermont women served as nurses in the state’s military hospitals and in the war zone. This story is told in their words\, from letters and diaries that describe life during the Civil War in the Green Mountain State.

DESCRIPTION:On Oct 23rd at 5:30-7pm Presenters James Slinkman and Josh Kuckens will explore how the Earth’s magnetic field protects us from dangerous high energy particle radiation which is carried to Earth from the Sun by the “Solar Wind”. \nWe’ll explore how this reaction manifests itself via the generation of beautiful visible Aurora (aka the “Northern Lights”) in the Earth’s atmosphere. The key quantum mechanisms which are involved are briefly described. SUMMARY:Feel the Wheel Pottery Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Here’s your chance to try your hand at the potter’s wheel! This workshop will be offered the last Friday of every month (most months). \nThis is a one time\, two hour introduction to learn the basics of wheel throwing. \nYou will be guided from a ball of clay to your first bowl or cup. Using a simple to understand process\, you will learn the foundational techniques needed to enjoy this meditative and somewhat magical craft. Most students will successfully throw at least 2 pots which will be fired and finished by us\, ready to pick up in approximately 3 weeks. \nIf you throw more than 2 that you would like to keep we can finish them as well for $15/pot (first 2 are included). Shipping is available for additional fees.

DESCRIPTION:This is a first time collaboration between Mad Arts\, Mad River Valley TV and journalist Tracy Brannstrom. \n“Along the River’s Way” is a storytelling project that formed as the ‘Mad Artist Residency\, 2024. This project documents the creative practices of various elder artists in the Mad River Valley. It culminates into an immersive multimedia exhibition of sound\, story-telling and visual projections during November and ends on December 13th. The art of storytelling is a fundamental aspect of human communication and has been an integral part of our cultural heritage for centuries. Today our communities are in crisis. The arts can restore this large feeling of social and moral decline in America and our Elder creatives can lead the way to facilitate social cohesion and belonging for everyone in the community. There will be a matinee\, starting at 3:00 PM (doors at 2:30)\, and an evening show at 7:00 pm (doors at 5:30pm)\nTime & Location \nNov 08\, 2025\, 3:00 PM\nWaitsfield\, 48 Carroll Rd\, Waitsfield\, VT 05673\, USA\nAbout the event \nMountainfilm on Tour: November 8\, 2025 at the Big Picture\nNeck of the Woods Childcare and Early Education Center is pleased to bring the Mountainfilm on Tour to the Big Picture in Waitsfield on Saturday\, November 8. There will be a matinee\, starting at 3:00 PM (doors at 2:30)\, and an evening show at 7:00 pm (doors at 5:30pm). Tickets are $20 for general admission\, $15 for children age 12 and under\, and kids under the age of 5 are free. There will be a silent auction and raffle as well\, with items including a 2025/2026 Mad River Glen season pass with an electronic raffle available to all (even if not attending Mountainfilm\, use QR code on poster or visit https://neckwoods.betterworld.org/giveaways/mad-river-glen-ski-pass?)\, and numerous items and gift certificates from local businesses. This year’s event is sponsored by Alpine Options\, Mad River Glen\, Lawson’s Finest Liquids\, Clear Water Filtration\, Mehuron’s Supermarket\, Waitsfield Telecom\, Ward’s Mechanical\, and American Flatbread! \nThe event will show short documentary films selected from the Mountainfilm festival in Telluride\, Colorado. The films explore themes connected to Mountainfilm’s mission of using the power of film\, art and ideas to inspire audiences to create a better world. NOW also runs the after-school program at the Moretown Elementary School and the summer camp programs at Harwood.
