SUMMARY:“Keeping Adolescents Safe on the Internet”
DESCRIPTION:Free training opportunity brought to you by Prevent Child Abuse Vermont and Hannah’s House \nWednesday\, April 2\, 2025 9am-11am at Waitsfield Village Meeting House\, 4355 Main St\, Waitsfield\, VT 05673 \nToday’s youth live in a world that is fully intertwined with technology. Tweens and teens make decisions daily\, often independently\, regarding online relationships. This training provides adults with a deeper understanding of the multiple kinds of digital risks all youth encounter in the digital environment: online grooming\, in-person grooming facilitated by digital communications\, sexting\, and online pornography. \nWe also look at the legal consequences for minors engaging in consensual or non-consensual sexting. Participants will a) strategize ways to keep all youth safe in digital environments. b) learn effective strategies for dealing with youth exhibiting concerning digital behaviors. C) identify supports when youth encounter unwanted behaviors online and resources that can be accessed to remove unwanted images from the internet. \nThis program is designed for teachers\, coaches\, afterschool professionals\, parents and caregivers of adolescents and teens. Light refreshments will be served. \nReserve your spot by emailing Kirstie Grant at kgrant@pcavt.org.\nThis training counts for afterschool and advanced specialized care in BFIS.\nVermont professionals in particular professions can earn 2 CE credits by attending.

SUMMARY:Coexisting with Bears: Being Responsible Neighbors
DESCRIPTION:Spring is upon us and the return of warm weather also means the return of our black bears! Emerging from hibernation and hungry for calories\, our bears find trash cans\, bird feeders\, and compost piles to be easy meals. They mean no harm\, but this behavior leads them to losing their wariness of people and can result in damage to property\, cars\, and homes. \nPlease join the Mad River Valley Bear Initiative for a presentation on this topic from Sarah Crockett\, educator and advocate for human/bear coexistence. The presentation will cover black bear ecology\, common causes of conflict between bears and our community\, and practical ways we can change our behaviors to reduce conflict. Expect to walk away with a greater appreciation for bears and useful strategies for keeping food and attractants away from them\, ensuring we can keep our bears wild for years to come. \nThe presentation will take place in the Mini-Bear Room in The Schoolhouse at Sugarbush’s Lincoln Peak (84 Warren Dr\, Warren\, VT). \nAbout the presenter: Sarah Crockett\, M.D.\, is an emergency department physician with Dartmouth Health\, specializing in wilderness medicine. Her passion for the outdoors and wilderness medicine as well as mentorship from Ben Kilham of the Kilham Bear Center has led to her interest and involvement in providing community education on black bear coexistence. \nAbout MRVBI: The Mad River Valley Bear Initiative is a local volunteer group that raises awareness about the bears that live around us in this community. We are made up of folks from the five towns in our watershed: Warren\, Waitsfield\, Fayston\, Duxbury\, and Moretown. Learn more about our work and find resources for living alongside black bears at https://MRVBears.org.

SUMMARY:Dam It: Partnering with Beavers to Heal the Planet
DESCRIPTION:Join Friends of the Mad River for the next installment of our Climate & Ecology Expert Series as we welcome author and environmental journalist Ben Goldfarb for his presentation “Dam It: Partnering with Beavers to Heal the Planet”. Register for this virtual event at https://tinyurl.com/fmrbeaver. \nIn his book “Eager: The Surprising\, Secret Life of Beavers and Why They Matter”\, Ben Goldfarb reveals that our modern conception of a healthy ecosystem is wrong\, distorted by the fur trade that once eliminated millions of beavers from North America’s waterways. The consequences of losing beavers were profound: ponds drained\, wetlands dried up\, and species from salmon to swans lost vital habitat. Today\, a growing coalition of “Beaver Believers”—including scientists\, farmers\, and passionate citizens—recognizes that ecosystems with beavers are far healthier than those without them. From the Nevada deserts to the Scottish highlands\, Believers are hard at work restoring these industrious rodents to their former haunts. In his talk\, Ben will discuss the history and biology of this world-changing species; how beavers can help us fight drought\, flooding\, wildfire\, and climate change; and how we can coexist with this challenging but vital rodent. \nAbout the speaker: Ben Goldfarb is an environmental journalist whose work has appeared in National Geographic\, the Atlantic\, Smithsonian Magazine\, and many other publications\, and has twice been anthologized in the “Best American Science & Nature Writing”. His most recent book\, “Crossings: How Road Ecology Is Shaping the Future of Our Planet”\, was named one of the best books of 2023 by the New York Times\, and received the Rachel Carson Award for Excellence in Environmental Writing and the Banff Book Competition’s Grand Prize. His previous book\, “Eager: The Surprising\, Secret Life of Beavers and Why They Matter”\, won the PEN/E.O. Wilson Literary Science Writing Award. He lives in Colorado with his wife\, Elise\, and his dog\, Kit — which is\, of course\, what you call a baby beaver.

SUMMARY:Braver Angels Workshop for Individuals who identify with having ” blue-learning” political views
DESCRIPTION:This “Depolarizing Ourselves”Workshop is designed to help lessen the effects of polarization that often occurs when we find ourselves in challenging political conversations. It introduces skills and techniques to help people reframe how we view “the other side” in the face of disagreements around politics. By “polarization\,” we are not referring to healthy disagreements over issues or philosophy; we are talking about how we regard and talk about large groups of ordinary people on the other side of our own politics as if they were enemies. \nThis workshop is designed for individuals who identify as holding “blue learning” political views. The two-hour session will be led by Braver Angels VT State co-coordinators\, Lincoln Earle-Centers and Katherine Cadwell. \nParticipants will learn : \n• How to be more aware of our own “inner polarizer”\, that is how we use specific language and stereotypes to dismiss or demonize others with different views \n• How to talk about “the other side” in a non-polarizing way \n• Specific skills for depolarizing conversations with like-minded people
