SUMMARY:Green Valley Rally
DESCRIPTION:For the third consecutive year the Mad River Valley towns Green Up Committees are collaborating to make the most of the effort. They are coordinating their efforts under the banner of the Green Valley Rally. Vermont’s annual Green Up Day will take place on May 3\, 2025 with the Green Valley Rally being the epicenter for all activities here in the MRV. It will take place at the Mad River Valley Welcome Center (at the corner of Routes 100 and 17) from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. People can stop by to pick up Green Up bags\, morning snacks\, and roadside assignments. People will also have the chance to learn more about volunteer opportunities with the Friends of the Mad River\, stewardMRV\, and Valley conservation and knotweed eradication programs\, and other stewardship organizations. \nGREEN UP DAY BOTTLE DRIVE\nOrganizers are  asking all Green Up Day volunteers to separate clean(ish) refundable cans found along the roadsides this year. They will provide separate clear bags for these cans and ask that people bring the bags back to the Welcome Center. Funds raised from redeemed the cans are donated to the Mad River Valley Interfaith Council\, which serves neighbors in need. \nVOLUNTEER JOB FAIR\nStarting at noon and running through 2 p.m. there will be a BBQ from noon to 2 p.m. for Green Up Day and stewardMRV volunteers. During that time there will also be a stewardMRV volunteer job fair. People can learn more about other conservation and stewardship opportunities. Representatives from various local organizations involved in stewardship in The Valley will be on hand to share information about volunteer opportunities. Those interested can look into becoming a stewardMRV site steward\, a Friends of the Mad River Watch volunteer\, a Mad River Path volunteer or even help out with the Mad River Valley Recreation District. \nTIRE RECYCLING\nThe Mad River Resource Management Alliance (MRRMA) is collecting tires at the Earthwise Transfer Station on Green Up Day from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Those who find a tire along a roadside can bring it to the transfer station for recycling free of charge. To recycle personal tires\, the MRRMA will process those (with or without rims) for $5 each. \nVOLUNTEER BBQ\nThere will be a BBQ for all Green Up day volunteers to come celebrate our collective efforts. The grill will be lit starting at noon! The John Packard Blues Band will be playing for the entertainment of our volunteers. Thanks to Afterthoughts and Valley Meade Dispensary for sponsoring the live music! \nAPRES GREEN UP DAY KENTUCKY DERBY AT Afterthoughts\nGreen Up Day always coincides with the Kentucky Derby so Afterthoughts will be  hosting an Apres-Green Up Day Kentucky Derby party with a build your own Kentucky Derby hat contest. Entries must be made from repurposed\, reused and reimagined materials (not necessarily litter from Green Up Day). The event will start around 4 pm\, contest judging at 5 pm.\, Derby viewing at 6:50. \nFor more Green Up Day information contact: \n\nWaitsfield: Bri Skoldberg\, briskoldberg@gmail.com\, 802-829-0878\nFayston: Patty Pasley\, plpasley@gmail.com\, 802-825-1893\nWarren: Warren Town Office\, clerk@warrenvt.org\, 802-496-2709\nMoretown: Mike Dimotsis\, dimotsisjane@gmail.com\, 802-469-2812\nSwim Holes\, Ira Shadis\, ira@friendsofthemadriver.org\n\n

SUMMARY:Community Recreation Visioning
DESCRIPTION:Community Forum\, Wednesday\, May 21\, 2025\nLareau Pavilion\n5 – 6 Potluck\nPlease bring a plate and utensils\, cash bar. Multiple CRV Steering Committee\nmembers with laptops will do demos of the online mapping tool. You can look at your own land or a\nfavorite spot in the Valley. \n6 – 8 Meeting Agenda:\n– Welcome and brief overview of the evening (5 min) Phil Huffman \n– Shared Vision document presented (20 min) Phil Huffman\, Ira Shadis & Bob Kogut \n– CRV 2.0 structure (brief intro including Work Priorities & Leads) (10 min) Laura Arnesen\n– Walk about (45 min): Laura explains\, Alice Rodgers manages bell to encourage people to\nmove tables \n– CRV Partners have tables around the room (all Conservation Commissions at one table)\nand attendees move between tables; CRV partners explain how they are implementing CRV in their\nwork and future plans \n– One table\, staffed by CRV members\, has posters with top CRV Work Priorities & Leads –\nattendees are asked for input by attaching a post it-note with questions\, suggestions or offers of\nhelp. Five priorities:\n1 Code of Ethics for MRV Recreation Users\, we’d like your suggestions?\n2 Promote CRV outreach efforts to private landowners. Possible strategies: develop and\nshare a toolkit with information and contacts and/or establish a CRV technical assistance\nprocess for private landowners considering new trails. Other strategies?\n3 Seek scientific data to better understand the ecological health of the valley for siting and\nmanagement of existing and future trails. Data to include wildlife corridors\, road crossings\,\nhabitat connectors\, etc. Please weigh in on the importance of this data.\n4 Opportunities to enhance our understanding of the ecological health of the valley and the\neffect of trails and recreation on it. Please suggest topics and/or specific speakers.\n5 Dogs on Trails. Town statutes pertain: Warren and Fayston require leashes; Waitsfield and\nMoretown dogs must be under voice command. Issues: dogs off leash\, dog poop is not\nalways picked up and bags are sometimes not disposed of properly\, visitors may not know\ndog policies\, etc. Suggestions for improvement? \n– “Play” by Trails groups based on CRV Recreational Trail Development Process Guide (10\nmin) Misha Golfman and friends\, this fun loving group of trail managers will bring this document to\nlife as they “consider” developing a new trail. \n– Q & A (10 min) \n– Closing thank you and next steps (5 min) Sam Robinson

SUMMARY:Birds & Your Buffer: Landowner Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Riparian buffers and upland forests provide valuable habitat for a wide variety of birds as well as playing a crucial role in protecting water quality and river health. Restoration projects are a meaningful way that landowners can improve their riverside and forest habitat. \nDuring this workshop\, we will tour a private property that was planted with 1\,200 trees last year as part of ongoing riparian restoration efforts. As we walk and talk\, we will explore the connection between river dynamics\, land management\, bird habitat\, and restoration work. This event is perfect for landowners or land managers interested in learning more about caring for their land\, especially in the context of bird habitat and river systems. \nWe will hear expertise and insights from:\nIra Shadis – Executive Director\, Friends of the Mad River\nMark LaBarr – Conservation Program Manager\, Audubon Vermont\nMacie Broussard – Senior Conservation Associate\, Audubon Vermont \nThere is a limited number of spots available for this workshop\, so please register ahead of time. Register at tinyurl.com/birdsbuffer. To respect the privacy of the landowner\, we will contact you with specifics about the location of the workshop at the email you use to register. \nThis event is part of Mad About Birds Day hosted by Friends of the Mad River\, a day of activities celebrating the Mad River Valley’s birds and the landscapes they call home. To learn more and see the other events happening as part of the celebration\, visit friendsofthemadriver.org/madaboutbirds.
