SUMMARY:Community Volunteer Job Fair
DESCRIPTION:Get Involved: Mad River Valley Community Job Fair + Film Screening \nCivic involvement is the cornerstone of a thriving community—and here in the Mad River Valley\, there are so many ways to make a difference. Join us for the Mad River Valley Community Job Fair\, where local organizations will come together to share meaningful opportunities to get involved and give back. \nYou’ll have a chance to meet with representatives from groups doing important work in our Valley\, including:• Mad River Mentoring• Mad River Valley Chamber of Commerce• stewardMRV• MRV Rotary Club• MRV Ambulance Service• The Knotweed Project• Local Town Conservation Commissions…and more! \nTo deepen the weekend’s theme of civic engagement\, we’re also hosting a special screening of the feature documentary Join or Die—a compelling look at the half-century decline of American civic life through the work of renowned social scientist Robert Putnam\, author of Bowling Alone. The film explores three pressing questions: \n\n\nWhat makes democracy work? \n\n\nWhy is American democracy in crisis? \n\n\nMost importantly—what can we do about it? \n\n\nThe documentary features voices from Hillary Clinton\, Pete Buttigieg\, Surgeon General Vivek Murthy\, Eddie Glaude Jr.\, Raj Chetty\, Priya Parker\, and many grassroots leaders working to rebuild community across the country. \nDetails for the screening are coming soon—stay tuned! \nLet’s come together to strengthen our Valley and reimagine what civic life can look like.

SUMMARY:How to Manage Invasive Species across a Watershed (Workshop)
DESCRIPTION:Please join us at an upcoming field workshop sponsored by North Branch Nature Center in collaboration with the Warren\, Waitsfield and Fayston Conservation Commissions and the University of Vermont’s Ecological Planning Laboratory. \nHow to Manage Invasive Species across a Watershed (Workshop) will be held on September 22nd from 4:00 to 6:30 pm. The tour will begin at the Waitsfield Town offices at 4144 Main Street. For more information and to register\, go to the North Branch workshop page\, at https://northbranchnaturecenter.org/event/wlc-invasives/ . \nThe Mad River Valley Knotweed Project has been working for eight years to map and control invasive plants and restore riverside habitats in the Mad River Watershed. Along the way\, they’ve experimented with every technique under the sun\, from hand-pulling to mowing to goat grazing\, partnering with university faculty and biodiversity experts along the way to improve and evaluate their efforts and create a comprehensive GIS mapping system\, and develop experience in riparian habitat restoration. On this tour\, see what techniques have—and haven’t—worked\, what kind of progress has been achieved\, and learn why managing invasives requires experience in community building and systems thinking. The workshop will be led by Sean Beckett\, Program Director at North Branch and an accomplished educator. \nServing as workshop resources are:\n– Noelia Barrios-Garcia\, an Instructor and Invasive Species Ecologist with the Rubenstein School of the Environment and Natural Resources at UVM.\n– Jito Coleman\, chair of the Warren Conservation Commission.\n– Andrea Henderson\, co-chair of the Fayston Conservation Commission.\n– Curt Lindberg\, chair of the Waitsfield Conservation Commission and co-founder of the Vermont Biodiversity Alliance. \nIf you are concerned with the threat presented by Japanese knotweed and wondering about management options and sensible watershed strategies to stem its spread\, please join us.

SUMMARY:How Low Can We Go? – Modern Airtightness Targets in Multifamily Housing with Nate Gusakov\, Green Mountain Enclosure Consulting\, LLC. (Yestermorrow Fall Speaker Series)
DESCRIPTION:Driven by code\, available incentives\, and forward-thinking design teams\, many of the recent or upcoming large multifamily new construction projects in Vermont are targeting (and usually achieving) airtightness levels that approach those of certified PHIUS buildings. Using examples from local case studies\, this presentation gives an overview of the current journey towards ultra-airtightness in large buildings including challenges\, lessons learned\, and thoughts on the future. \nFall Speaker Series: Innovative Homes\nThis talk is presented as part of our Fall 2025 Speaker Series. All talks are free and open to the public\, and take place Wednesday evenings from 6:30 – 8 pm. No registration required\, just drop by. \nTwice a year\, we curate a series of lectures on a design/build theme. This Fall we are tackling part two of our “Innovative Homes” series\, this time focusing in on multi-family homes. We’ll discuss different ways cities and towns are approaching sustainable housing development and affordability through case studies of unique living spaces.

SUMMARY:A Conversation Around Eco-Anxiety and Resilience: A VT Reads event
DESCRIPTION:Join the MRV Libraries\, Friends of the Mad River\, and psychotherapist Maia Kiley for a conversation around eco-anxiety and resilience. \nWe will unpack the common experience of climate distress\, which people experience as a range of emotions in response to news about climate change. Through information\, discussion\, and group exercises we will increase our understanding of climate distress and how we might begin to move from distress towards resilience.

SUMMARY:River Conservation in a Changing Climate: VT Reads event
DESCRIPTION:According to author John Seabrook\, whose article\, “The Floods Will Come\,” (July 28\,2025 New Yorker)\, Washington County ranked first in disaster declarations between 2011 and 2024 (mainly flood-related) and Vermont’s annual precipitation has increased six inches since the 1960s. Given this\, Seabrook foresees Vermont as a perfect laboratory for the study of intense rainfall on steep terrain and a proving ground for scientists\, policy makers\, regulators and land use planners who are on the front lines of a recurring catastrophe that traditional methods of flood prevention -dredging the river’s bottom\, armoring its sides\, berming its banks- have only made worse. \nPlease join Vermont river scientist\, Mike Kline\, for a conversation on how a deepening understanding of rivers that function well has led to a new era of river corridor and floodplain conservation to slow the flow of flood waters. When natural watersheds are functioning to store water\, there is less flood damage\, cleaner water and healthier aquatic ecosystems.
