SUMMARY:Irasville Village Master Plan – Community Open House #2
DESCRIPTION:The Waitsfield Planning Commission and Irasville Village Master Plan Steering Committee invite Mad River Valley residents to attend the second community open house for the Irasville Village Master Plan on Wednesday\, March 19th. \nThe open house will be held at the Village Meeting House at Waitsfield United Church of Christ\, located at 4355 Main St\, Waitsfield\, VT 05733. The event will open at 4:00 PM; you may come by at any time between 4:00 and 7:00 PM. Families are encouraged to attend – childcare will be provided by staff from Neck of the Woods\, and there will kid-oriented community planning exercises so that attendees of all ages can participate. \nThe Irasville Village Master Plan aims to provide an actionable\, pragmatic\, and forward-looking vision and roadmap for a vibrant village center. This planning process builds off recent progress in Irasville\, including a successful bond to fund the development of a municipal wastewater system and recent updates to zoning bylaws for Waitsfield’s villages. At this open house event\, participants will share their thoughts on potential village center development scenarios for the future of Irasville. This input will be critical shaping the recommendations of the Irasville Village Master Plan\, including strategies for promoting housing\, local businesses\, pedestrian and bicycle access\, community facilities\, outdoor recreation opportunities\, and natural resource conservation. \nThis open house event builds off the feedback provided by attendees at the first open house on November 18th\, 2024. Some of the key takeaways from the first open house included:\n• Attendees were both excited and concerned about the future of Irasville. The recent loss of businesses and community services Irasville was top of mind for many participants. At the same time\, many expressed that Irasville holds great potential as a vibrant village center for Waitsfield and the Mad River Valley.\n• Attendees were supportive of an infill development approach for future redevelopment in Irasville\, with a focus on housing\, local-serving businesses\, and mixed-use development.\n• Attendees were supportive of a balanced approach to wetlands in Irasville that preserves critical wetland functions while considering possible impacts to low-functioning wetlands if those impacts result in significant community benefit.\n• Attendees were supportive of exploring potential transportation infrastructure improvements to enhance and facilitate walkable development in Irasville\, such as improved pedestrian connections and possible new roadways to create village blocks.\n• Attendees want this planning process to explore enhanced recreational and community facilities\, such as a year-round recreation or community center and community gathering spaces.\n• Attendees were supportive of exploring a mix of building heights for future development\, with a minimum building height of two stories. \nIrasville is where the Mad River Valley comes to shop\, dine\, gather\, and play. This village area has long been envisioned as a vibrant community hub\, with a thoughtful mix of homes\, local businesses\, services\, and recreational amenities. For years this vision has been held in check\, challenged by insufficient infrastructure\, natural resource constraints\, and a lack of planning progress. Thanks to sustained efforts by local and regional partners\, the time is ripe to reestablish an actionable\, pragmatic\, and forward-looking vision and roadmap for Irasville. \nFor more information\, please visit the Town’s website. \nContact: JB Weir\, Planning & Zoning Administrator | pza@gmavt.net | (802) 496-2218 ext. 4

SUMMARY:Coexisting with Bears: Being Responsible Neighbors
DESCRIPTION:Spring is upon us and the return of warm weather also means the return of our black bears! Emerging from hibernation and hungry for calories\, our bears find trash cans\, bird feeders\, and compost piles to be easy meals. They mean no harm\, but this behavior leads them to losing their wariness of people and can result in damage to property\, cars\, and homes. \nPlease join the Mad River Valley Bear Initiative for a presentation on this topic from Sarah Crockett\, educator and advocate for human/bear coexistence. The presentation will cover black bear ecology\, common causes of conflict between bears and our community\, and practical ways we can change our behaviors to reduce conflict. Expect to walk away with a greater appreciation for bears and useful strategies for keeping food and attractants away from them\, ensuring we can keep our bears wild for years to come. \nThe presentation will take place in the Mini-Bear Room in The Schoolhouse at Sugarbush’s Lincoln Peak (84 Warren Dr\, Warren\, VT). \nAbout the presenter: Sarah Crockett\, M.D.\, is an emergency department physician with Dartmouth Health\, specializing in wilderness medicine. Her passion for the outdoors and wilderness medicine as well as mentorship from Ben Kilham of the Kilham Bear Center has led to her interest and involvement in providing community education on black bear coexistence. \nAbout MRVBI: The Mad River Valley Bear Initiative is a local volunteer group that raises awareness about the bears that live around us in this community. We are made up of folks from the five towns in our watershed: Warren\, Waitsfield\, Fayston\, Duxbury\, and Moretown. Learn more about our work and find resources for living alongside black bears at https://MRVBears.org.

SUMMARY:Dam It: Partnering with Beavers to Heal the Planet
DESCRIPTION:Join Friends of the Mad River for the next installment of our Climate & Ecology Expert Series as we welcome author and environmental journalist Ben Goldfarb for his presentation “Dam It: Partnering with Beavers to Heal the Planet”. Register for this virtual event at https://tinyurl.com/fmrbeaver. \nIn his book “Eager: The Surprising\, Secret Life of Beavers and Why They Matter”\, Ben Goldfarb reveals that our modern conception of a healthy ecosystem is wrong\, distorted by the fur trade that once eliminated millions of beavers from North America’s waterways. The consequences of losing beavers were profound: ponds drained\, wetlands dried up\, and species from salmon to swans lost vital habitat. Today\, a growing coalition of “Beaver Believers”—including scientists\, farmers\, and passionate citizens—recognizes that ecosystems with beavers are far healthier than those without them. From the Nevada deserts to the Scottish highlands\, Believers are hard at work restoring these industrious rodents to their former haunts. In his talk\, Ben will discuss the history and biology of this world-changing species; how beavers can help us fight drought\, flooding\, wildfire\, and climate change; and how we can coexist with this challenging but vital rodent. \nAbout the speaker: Ben Goldfarb is an environmental journalist whose work has appeared in National Geographic\, the Atlantic\, Smithsonian Magazine\, and many other publications\, and has twice been anthologized in the “Best American Science & Nature Writing”. His most recent book\, “Crossings: How Road Ecology Is Shaping the Future of Our Planet”\, was named one of the best books of 2023 by the New York Times\, and received the Rachel Carson Award for Excellence in Environmental Writing and the Banff Book Competition’s Grand Prize. His previous book\, “Eager: The Surprising\, Secret Life of Beavers and Why They Matter”\, won the PEN/E.O. Wilson Literary Science Writing Award. He lives in Colorado with his wife\, Elise\, and his dog\, Kit — which is\, of course\, what you call a baby beaver.

SUMMARY:Braver Angels Workshop for Individuals who identify with having ” blue-learning” political views
DESCRIPTION:This “Depolarizing Ourselves”Workshop is designed to help lessen the effects of polarization that often occurs when we find ourselves in challenging political conversations. It introduces skills and techniques to help people reframe how we view “the other side” in the face of disagreements around politics. By “polarization\,” we are not referring to healthy disagreements over issues or philosophy; we are talking about how we regard and talk about large groups of ordinary people on the other side of our own politics as if they were enemies. \nThis workshop is designed for individuals who identify as holding “blue learning” political views. The two-hour session will be led by Braver Angels VT State co-coordinators\, Lincoln Earle-Centers and Katherine Cadwell. \nParticipants will learn : \n• How to be more aware of our own “inner polarizer”\, that is how we use specific language and stereotypes to dismiss or demonize others with different views \n• How to talk about “the other side” in a non-polarizing way \n• Specific skills for depolarizing conversations with like-minded people

SUMMARY:Green Valley Rally
DESCRIPTION:For the third consecutive year the Mad River Valley towns Green Up Committees are collaborating to make the most of the effort. They are coordinating their efforts under the banner of the Green Valley Rally. Vermont’s annual Green Up Day will take place on May 3\, 2025 with the Green Valley Rally being the epicenter for all activities here in the MRV. It will take place at the Mad River Valley Welcome Center (at the corner of Routes 100 and 17) from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. People can stop by to pick up Green Up bags\, morning snacks\, and roadside assignments. People will also have the chance to learn more about volunteer opportunities with the Friends of the Mad River\, stewardMRV\, and Valley conservation and knotweed eradication programs\, and other stewardship organizations. \nGREEN UP DAY BOTTLE DRIVE\nOrganizers are  asking all Green Up Day volunteers to separate clean(ish) refundable cans found along the roadsides this year. They will provide separate clear bags for these cans and ask that people bring the bags back to the Welcome Center. Funds raised from redeemed the cans are donated to the Mad River Valley Interfaith Council\, which serves neighbors in need. \nVOLUNTEER JOB FAIR\nStarting at noon and running through 2 p.m. there will be a BBQ from noon to 2 p.m. for Green Up Day and stewardMRV volunteers. During that time there will also be a stewardMRV volunteer job fair. People can learn more about other conservation and stewardship opportunities. Representatives from various local organizations involved in stewardship in The Valley will be on hand to share information about volunteer opportunities. Those interested can look into becoming a stewardMRV site steward\, a Friends of the Mad River Watch volunteer\, a Mad River Path volunteer or even help out with the Mad River Valley Recreation District. \nTIRE RECYCLING\nThe Mad River Resource Management Alliance (MRRMA) is collecting tires at the Earthwise Transfer Station on Green Up Day from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Those who find a tire along a roadside can bring it to the transfer station for recycling free of charge. To recycle personal tires\, the MRRMA will process those (with or without rims) for $5 each. \nVOLUNTEER BBQ\nThere will be a BBQ for all Green Up day volunteers to come celebrate our collective efforts. The grill will be lit starting at noon! The John Packard Blues Band will be playing for the entertainment of our volunteers. SUMMARY:Community Recreation Visioning
DESCRIPTION:Community Forum\, Wednesday\, May 21\, 2025\nLareau Pavilion\n5 – 6 Potluck\nPlease bring a plate and utensils\, cash bar. Multiple CRV Steering Committee\nmembers with laptops will do demos of the online mapping tool. You can look at your own land or a\nfavorite spot in the Valley. \n6 – 8 Meeting Agenda:\n– Welcome and brief overview of the evening (5 min) Phil Huffman \n– Shared Vision document presented (20 min) Phil Huffman\, Ira Shadis & Bob Kogut \n– CRV 2.0 structure (brief intro including Work Priorities & Leads) (10 min) Laura Arnesen\n– Walk about (45 min): Laura explains\, Alice Rodgers manages bell to encourage people to\nmove tables \n– CRV Partners have tables around the room (all Conservation Commissions at one table)\nand attendees move between tables; CRV partners explain how they are implementing CRV in their\nwork and future plans \n– One table\, staffed by CRV members\, has posters with top CRV Work Priorities & Leads –\nattendees are asked for input by attaching a post it-note with questions\, suggestions or offers of\nhelp. Five priorities:\n1 Code of Ethics for MRV Recreation Users\, we’d like your suggestions?\n2 Promote CRV outreach efforts to private landowners. Possible strategies: develop and\nshare a toolkit with information and contacts and/or establish a CRV technical assistance\nprocess for private landowners considering new trails. Other strategies?\n3 Seek scientific data to better understand the ecological health of the valley for siting and\nmanagement of existing and future trails. Data to include wildlife corridors\, road crossings\,\nhabitat connectors\, etc. Please weigh in on the importance of this data.\n4 Opportunities to enhance our understanding of the ecological health of the valley and the\neffect of trails and recreation on it. Please suggest topics and/or specific speakers.\n5 Dogs on Trails. Town statutes pertain: Warren and Fayston require leashes; Waitsfield and\nMoretown dogs must be under voice command. Issues: dogs off leash\, dog poop is not\nalways picked up and bags are sometimes not disposed of properly\, visitors may not know\ndog policies\, etc. Suggestions for improvement? \n– “Play” by Trails groups based on CRV Recreational Trail Development Process Guide (10\nmin) Misha Golfman and friends\, this fun loving group of trail managers will bring this document to\nlife as they “consider” developing a new trail. \n– Q & A (10 min) \n– Closing thank you and next steps (5 min) Sam Robinson

SUMMARY:Birds & Your Buffer: Landowner Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Riparian buffers and upland forests provide valuable habitat for a wide variety of birds as well as playing a crucial role in protecting water quality and river health. Restoration projects are a meaningful way that landowners can improve their riverside and forest habitat. \nDuring this workshop\, we will tour a private property that was planted with 1\,200 trees last year as part of ongoing riparian restoration efforts. As we walk and talk\, we will explore the connection between river dynamics\, land management\, bird habitat\, and restoration work. This event is perfect for landowners or land managers interested in learning more about caring for their land\, especially in the context of bird habitat and river systems. \nWe will hear expertise and insights from:\nIra Shadis – Executive Director\, Friends of the Mad River\nMark LaBarr – Conservation Program Manager\, Audubon Vermont\nMacie Broussard – Senior Conservation Associate\, Audubon Vermont \nThere is a limited number of spots available for this workshop\, so please register ahead of time. Register at tinyurl.com/birdsbuffer. To respect the privacy of the landowner\, we will contact you with specifics about the location of the workshop at the email you use to register. \nThis event is part of Mad About Birds Day hosted by Friends of the Mad River\, a day of activities celebrating the Mad River Valley’s birds and the landscapes they call home. To learn more and see the other events happening as part of the celebration\, visit friendsofthemadriver.org/madaboutbirds.

SUMMARY:FILM/TALK/FOOD – Community Building
DESCRIPTION:BigTown Gallery in Rochester\, VT is celebrating 25 years of community programming—honoring a quarter-century of creativity\, connection\, and collaboration! In a time when the sense of community and shared understanding is more important than ever\, BigTown celebrates the enduring power of the arts to inspire and unite. To commemorate this special anniversary\, BigTown is thrilled to collaborate with Kyle Bergman\, founder of the Architecture & Design Film Festival\, to present three immersive community gatherings this summer. These events will spotlight the themes of community building\, activism\, and innovation\, and are designed to enrich the conversations sparked by BigTown’s summer exhibition\, Being Here Now\, and the second annual My Place Photography Workshop. Each event will feature a film screening\, artist’s talk\, and shared meal included with the ticket\, supporting BigTown’s 25th anniversary fundraising goal. \nThe first of these events is coming up quickly on Saturday\, June 28th! \nCOMMUNITY BUILDING\n3:30PM – FILM: Strange and Familiar: Architecture on Fogo Island\n5:00PM – TALK: Artist April Surgent\, featured in the summer exhibition\n6:00PM – GALLERY OPENING: BEING HERE NOW: A Photographic Look at Our World Today\n6:00PM – FOOD: Taste of Vermont\, in the garden \nJoin us for an unforgettable evening of film\, conversation\, and shared food—the first of our Summer FILM/ TALK/FOOD series and a celebration of those who lead by example to create lasting change. Whether in hometowns or far-off ecosystems\, this night honors the creativity\, commitment\, and compassion that help reshape our world. \nEvent tickets are on sale at the link for $50. This is a fundraiser for our 25th Year of Community Programming — if you can pay more\, we would greatly appreciate your generous support. \nThank you!
