SUMMARY:Memory Tree Lighting Ceremony
DESCRIPTION:The Mad River Valley Memory Tree provides a way for community members to remember and honor a loved one\, event\, or anything close to your hearts and support a great cause too. At the tree lighting ceremony the bulb dedications are read. Each light dedication costs $5 with donations matched by the Winthrop H. Smith Jr. Family Foundation. All funds raised from the Memory Tree initiative are donated to the stewardMRV program that works to steward the MRV’s outdoor recreational access point. \nThe Mad River Valley Memory Tree has long been a highlight to the annual illumination of the valley. It began as a fundraising project of the Mad River Valley Lions Club back in the 1970’s. \nThe original concept was borrowed from the Saint Johnsbury Lions Club. Each year they would hold a tree lighting ceremony on a Friday in December just after dark where they would read the names of those who bought bulbs and for whom. After the Lions Club disbanded the Memory Tree tradition went away until Joan Wilson\, John Gallagher and Nancy and Jess Mobley revived the idea in 2013. Each year a different cause is selected as the beneficiary of the funds raised. \nHonor Your Memory Today!\n$5 each or 5 for $20

SUMMARY:Clearing The Smoke – Fire & Safety Roundtable
DESCRIPTION:Safety is always the top priority for Mad River Valley businesses—and for good reason. Business owners care deeply about the well-being of their guests\, employees\, and neighbors. At the same time\, understanding and navigating fire and life safety rules can be challenging. Codes are complex\, interpretations can vary\, and it’s not always clear what is required\, what is recommended\, and how best to plan for compliance in a way that is both safe and sustainable. \nIn an effort to “clear up the smoke\,” the Mad River Valley Chamber of Commerce is hosting a Fire & Life Safety Roundtable on: \n📅 Wednesday\, January 7🕞 3:30–5:00 pm📍 Yestermorrow Design/Build School Campus \nThis roundtable is designed to create an open\, respectful\, and informative conversation between business owners and state public safety officials—focused on clarity\, consistency\, and shared goals. \nFeatured Speakers\nThe discussion will feature: \n\n\nLandon A. Wheeler\, Deputy DirectorVermont Department of Public Safety – Division of Fire Safety \n\n\nBen Moffatt\, Regional ManagerWaterbury Regional Office\, Department of Public Safety \n\n\nThe conversation will be moderated by Eric Friedman\, Executive Director of the Mad River Valley Chamber of Commerce. \nWhat We’ll Be Talking About\nAcross the Mad River Valley\, businesses of all sizes—inns\, restaurants\, lodges\, contractors and property managers—are navigating how best to meet safety standards while remaining financially viable and operationally stable. This roundtable is not about blame or complaints; it’s about understanding\, communication\, and problem-solving. \nTopics we hope to explore together include: \n\n\nUnderstanding the codesHow fire and life safety regulations are structured\, what they’re intended to accomplish\, and how they are applied in real-world settings. \n\n\nClarity around expectationsHow inspections work\, what business owners should expect during and after an inspection\, and how to interpret findings and next steps. \n\n\nConsistency and continuityHow inspections may differ over time or between inspectors\, and how businesses can better plan for long-term compliance. \n\n\nPractical pathways to complianceDiscussing approaches that prioritize safety while recognizing the realities of historic buildings\, small-scale operations\, and seasonal businesses. \n\n\nPreserving what makes Vermont specialExploring how safety upgrades can coexist with the historic\, rustic character that defines many Mad River Valley properties and attracts visitors. \n\n\nCreating a level playing fieldUnderstanding how safety oversight applies across different types of lodging and visitor accommodations. \n\n\nWhy This Matters\nA strong Mad River Valley depends on businesses that are safe\, resilient\, and able to thrive. When rules are clearly understood and applied consistently\, business owners can plan ahead\, make smart investments\, and focus on delivering great experiences to residents and visitors alike. \nThis roundtable is an opportunity to ask questions\, hear directly from state officials\, and build a shared understanding that supports public safety\, business sustainability\, and the long-term health of our local economy. \nWe encourage business owners\, property managers\, and anyone navigating fire and life safety regulations to attend and take part in this important conversation. \nLet’s clear up the smoke—together.

SUMMARY:Community Socrates Cafe: ” How Does the Passage of Time Affect Our Identity?”
DESCRIPTION:Students from Harwood’s Harkness Leadership class will be hosting a community Socrates Café on Thursday\, January 8th from 5:30 to 7:00 PM in the HU library. A Socrates Café is an opportunity for dialogue about timeless and timely questions that all human beings deal with. Rather than being a debate or a discussion\, a Socrates Café is a dialogue where participants are encouraged to listen to and learn from one another. This form of discourse- and its focus on the search for knowledge- comes from the great philosopher Socrates\, who observed that “Wisdom Begins in Wonder.” These gatherings are open to all community members\, regardless of age\, experience\, or background. Harwood students who are experienced in leading Socratic Dialogues will facilitate the discussions. Community members of all ages are invited\, and refreshments will be provided. \nThe question for the evening discussion is “How Does the Passage of Time Affect Our Identity?” \nFor questions and more information\, please contact Adam Sargent at asargent@huusd.org.

SUMMARY:Harwood Auditorium Revitalization Project at the Big Picture; Featuring Reid Parsons
DESCRIPTION:Harwood Alum\, Reid Parsons\, will return to the Mad River Valley to headline a fundraising concert for the Harwood Auditorium Revitalization Project at the Big Picture on Saturday\, January 17th. The show will celebrate the legacy of high-quality music education at Harwood by featuring Parsons and including the current HUHS student band\, the Glam Cowboys\, as the opening act. \nThe show is part of a concert series presented throughout the Harwood district to support HARP\, the Harwood Auditorium Revitalization Project. HARP was created to raise funds for key improvements that will benefit students\, educators\, and the broader community. The HARP seeks to transform an aging facility into a vibrant\, safe\, and fully equipped space that reflects the talent and dedication of our students and community. Despite years of excellence in our Music and Theater programs\, the theater itself has not been substantially renovated since 1997 and no longer meets the needs of modern performances. \nHarwood Theater Director Scott Weigand felt Parsons was a perfect choice to perform since she reflects the longstanding high caliber of the HUHS Music Department. A 2011 Harwood alum\, Parsons was very involved in the Harwood Music department and was the lead in “Annie Get Your Gun” in 2009\, the first Harwood show Weigand directed. \nParsons is now a Burlington-based singer-songwriter whose music blends soul\, folk\, blues\, and jazz-infused Americana into something both grounded and expansive. Her debut full-length album\, “Back to Back”\, released in the spring of 2025\, showcases her signature style: expressive vocals\, layered arrangements\, and songs that are as emotionally resonant as they are sonically rich. Written\, arranged\, and produced by Parsons herself\, the record moves confidently between intimate ballads and full-band tracks with a deep sense of groove and feeling. \nOpening the show for Parsons will be the Glam Cowboys\, Harwood’s next generation of talent\, made up of active members of the Harwood Music and Theater Departments. The Glam Cowboys are an indie-pop/rock band featuring Eireann McDonough on lead vocals\, Tarin Askew on guitar and vocals\, Cora Potts on drums\, Cali Neville on bass\, and Eliza Whitehair on keys.\nKnown for their coordinated attire and live energy\, they perform a diverse collection of original music. They have performed at venues such as Zen Barn\, Higher Ground\, Firefolk Arts\, and recently in MRVTV’s In-Studio Live Music Series. \nTickets are available at:\nhttps://www.bigpicturetheater.info/event-details/harwood-auditorium-revitalization-project-presen ts-reid-parsons
