DESCRIPTION:For the fourth consecutive year the Mad River Valley town’s Green Up Committees are collaborating under the banner of the Green Valley Rally on Vermont’s annual Green Up Day. On May 2\, 2026  the Green Valley Rally will be the epicenter for all Green Up Day activities here in the MRV. It will take place at the Mad River Valley Welcome Center (at the corner of Routes 100 and 17) from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. People can stop by to pick up Green Up bags\, morning snacks\, and roadside assignments. People will also have the chance to learn more about our partnering organizations such as the Friends of the Mad River\, stewardMRV\, Mad River Bear Inititative\, the Mad River Valley Chamber of Commerce\, the Mad RIver Riders\, the Mad River Path\, valley conservation and knotweed eradication programs\, and other stewardship organizations. \nGREEN UP DAY BOTTLE DRIVE\nOrganizers are  asking all Green Up Day volunteers to separate clean(ish) refundable cans found along the roadsides this year. They will provide separate clear bags for these cans and ask that people bring the bags back to the Welcome Center. Funds raised from redeemed the cans are donated to the Mad River Valley Interfaith Council\, which serves neighbors in need. \nMEET THE STEWARDSHIP PARTNERS\nStarting at noon and running through 2 p.m. there will be a BBQ from noon to 2 p.m. for Green Up Day and stewardMRV volunteers. During that time there will also be a stewardMRV volunteer job fair. People can learn more about other conservation and stewardship opportunities. Representatives from various local organizations involved in stewardship in The Valley will be on hand to share information about volunteer opportunities. Those interested can look into becoming a stewardMRV site steward\, a Friends of the Mad River Watch volunteer\, a Mad River Path volunteer or even help out with the Mad River Valley Recreation District. \nTIRE RECYCLING\nThe Mad River Resource Management Alliance (MRRMA) is collecting tires at the Earthwise Transfer Station on Green Up Day from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Those who find a tire along a roadside can bring it to the transfer station for recycling free of charge. To recycle personal tires\, the MRRMA will process those (with or without rims) for $5 each. \nVOLUNTEER BBQ\nThere will be a BBQ for all Green Up day volunteers to come celebrate our collective efforts. The grill will be lit starting at noon! The John Lackard Blues Band will be playing for the entertainment of our volunteers. Thanks to Afterthoughts and Valley Meade Dispensary for sponsoring the live music! \n \nJoin us for the Bear Fair! \n\nBEAR FAIR\nA fun and informative community event focused on how we can better coexist with black bears here in the Mad River Valley. The fair will feature five interactive “stations” highlighting common bear–human interactions and practical steps you can take to reduce conflicts at home and around your business. Explore topics like securing trash\, managing compost\, removing bird feeders\, and using electrification to protect property—all presented in an approachable\, hands-on way. Four stations will be set up in the Cousins Beer Garden area\, with a fifth hosted at the Mad River Valley Chamber Visitor Center. Inside the Visitor Center\, attendees can drop in to watch “Living with Bears” video presentation by Vermont Fish & Wildlife bear biologist Jaclyn Comeau\, running on a continuous loop. Stop by anytime to learn more\, ask questions\, and leave better prepared to live responsibly alongside one of Vermont’s most iconic wild neighbors. \n \nMeet me at Afterthoughts! \n\nKENTUCKY DERBY HAT PARTY & APRES GREEN UP DAY AT AFTERTHOUGHTS\nGreen Up Day always coincides with the Kentucky Derby so Afterthoughts decided to host an Apres-Green Up Day Kentucky Derby party with a build your own Kentucky Derby hat contest. SUMMARY:Called To Duty

Followed by a discussion and Q&A with your local fire department.\nAbout the film\nPlease join us for this amazing documentary to honor the lives of Terry Brown and Dana Fuller. This film will leave you with a deep appreciation for their ultimate sacrifice\, but also for the potential sacrifice that all firefighters are willing to accept in their duties. To protect life and property is a Firefighter’s duty. Using never before seen archival photos\, the producers Mike Smith\, Sue Smith\, Marty Gallagher\, and Alex Stradling tell the stories of the night of the Star Hotel Fire; the rescues of the occupants trapped by the fire\, the bravery of the firefighters\, the leadership challenge of the new Fire Chief\, and the tragic loss of two young men. \nAdditional Information\nAll entry donations will be given to Memorial Park in Bellows Falls\, VT\, to aid in the maintenance and desired improvements. The park was constructed to honor the lives of the fallen firefighters.\nThere will be local fire department representatives and members from the film available to discuss the film\, answer questions\, and reflect.\nThis film is sponsored by YOUR local fire department members\, and all entry fees will be on a “pay as you can ” basis.

SUMMARY:MRV Women in Business – Social Media Workshop
DESCRIPTION:These bi-monthly workshops are a place to have an open conversation about social media\, what is working for everyone\, what isn’t\, what do you need help with? The MRV Chamber’s MRV Women in Business group decided to host these bi-monthly Social Media Workshops in the months in between the more structured MRV Women in Business Meetings. It is meant to be an open\, collaborative brainstorming session designed to help you feel a little more prepared the next time you create a post or reel. \nLet’s be honest\, social media can feel overwhelming.\nWhat do you post?\nShould you use trending sounds?\nDo captions really matter?\nWhat makes a strong hook?\nWhy should people follow your page? Is your SEO set up? \nThis workshop is a space to come together and talk all things social. We’ll brainstorm content ideas\, discuss what’s actually working right now\, explore collaborations\, and share experiences. The goal? You leave feeling inspired and ready to create a few new posts for your page.  We will  share hook ideas\, trending sound ideas\, adding words to the screen\, adding captions\, and anything else you would like to cover. The event is hosted by Samantha Ciccone\, the coordinator of the MRV Women in Business Group. \nPlease feel free to BYOB if you’d like to sip while we brainstorm\, and you’re welcome to grab snacks from Peace Burger across the street or from your favorite local spot.

SUMMARY:Coffee With an Advisor
DESCRIPTION:Life is full of questions\, and money is no different. Sometimes you just want to ask something. Bring or pour a cup of your favorite warm beverage\, and join me at the Mad River Valley Welcome Center. Come as you are. All are welcome. And every question counts—simple\, complex\, or somewhere in between.  It’s a relaxed\, open conversation about money\, planning\, and whatever’s on your mind. Kassie Reid from Greenhill Financial Planners will be on hand to chat. \nEach quarter we’ll have a different theme to get the conversation going; \n\n\nMarch: A Fresh StartPour a cup and bring your thoughts and curiosities. The start of the year is a natural time to evaluate your goals and priorities\, capture momentum\, and plan for the year ahead. This space is designed to welcome everyone\, whether your questions feel simple\, complicated\, or somewhere in between. It’s a relaxed\, open conversation about money\, planning\, and whatever’s on your mind. \n\n\nMay: Summer PauseLonger days and shifting routines can make this time of year feel both energizing and full\, so before summer sweeps you away\, take a moment to pause. Bring whatever’s on your mind—upcoming plans\, changing expenses\, or simply a question you’ve been meaning to ask. This is a relaxed\, welcoming space to reflect\, recalibrate\, and talk through money decisions in a way that feels grounded and practical. Come as you are and join the conversation. \n\n\nAugust: Fall TransitionsAs the seasons shift\, so do routines and priorities. Settle in with something warm and join an open conversation about what this transition might bring—new schedules\, business cycles\, evolving goals\, or unexpected change. We could explore how these shifts connect to your financial life\, from cash flow to longer-term direction\, or wherever the discussion naturally leads. Bring your questions and curiosity. \n\n\nNovember: Year’s EndAs the year winds down\, it’s a natural time to reflect on what’s unfolded and consider what comes next. Gather your thoughts and join the conversation around year-end considerations—from giving and tax planning to tying up loose ends or preparing for January. This is a supportive place to organize your reflections\, acknowledge progress\, and make intentional decisions before the calendar turns. Wherever you’re at\, you’re welcome at the table.

SUMMARY:Socrates Cafe at Harwood!
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the next Community Socrates Café\nMay 28th from 5:30 to 7:00 PM \nDiscussion Question: What is the value of empathy to our society? \nStudents from Harwood’s Harkness Leadership class will be hosting a community Socrates Café on Thursday\, May 28th from 5:30 to 7:00 PM in the HU library. A Socrates Café is an opportunity for dialogue about timeless and timely questions that all human beings deal with. Rather than being a debate or a discussion\, a Socrates Café is a dialogue where participants are encouraged to listen to and learn from one another. This form of discourse- and its focus on the search for knowledge- comes from the great philosopher Socrates\, who observed that “Wisdom Begins in Wonder.” These gatherings are open to all community members\, regardless of age\, experience\, or background. Harwood students who are experienced in leading Socratic Dialogues will facilitate the discussions. Community members of all ages are invited\, and refreshments will be provided. For questions and more information\, please contact Eve Berinati eberinati@huusd.org.

SUMMARY:Pratt Refuge Trail Celebration
DESCRIPTION:Join the Vermont Land Trust for a community celebration at the Pratt Refuge marking the completion of new and improved trails designed to expand access\, learning\, and exploration. \nA newly built universally accessible woodland trail now connects the parking area to the cabin and restroom while guiding visitors through a Forestry for the Birds demonstration site developed with Audubon Vermont. Recently installed interpretive signage along the route highlights forest management practices that support healthy bird habitat and thriving ecosystems. \nAdditional trail improvements include punchoen and benches in the lower birding meadow and a newly-built trail up to a view of Camel’s Hump. \nJoin us for brief remarks recognizing the partners who helped bring these improvements to life\, followed by guided strolls along the trails and finishing with refreshments in the cabin. \nThe Pratt Refuge borders the vast forests of Camel’s Hump State Park and sits within one of Vermont’s highest-priority interior forest and wildlife connectivity areas—an ecologically rich landscape of northern hardwood and mixedwood forest\, streams\, vernal pools\, and mountain views. Come experience this remarkable landscape and celebrate expanded access to the outdoors! \nIf needed\, the rain date will be Thursday June 11.

SUMMARY:Premiere Wind Power Vermont Leads the Way Documentary
DESCRIPTION:A little known story is that of the Smith-Putnam Wind Turbine built on Grandpa’s Knob near Castleton\, Vermont in 1941. This was first megawatt wind turbine in the world to be connected to a utility company. The turbine ran on and off between 1941 and 1945 and it took the US over thirty years to achieve this amazing feat again. \nLocal film maker Ian Sweet and wind expert Dan Reicher tell the story of the Smith-Putnam Wind Turbine and how it influenced the future.
