SUMMARY:RISE: Trees\, Our Botanical Giants
DESCRIPTION:Mad River Valley Arts is excited to present its first group show of the year entitled RISE: Trees\, Our Botanical Giants from March 7- April 26\, 2024. There will be a reception on March 7\, 5-7pm when first\, second and third place prize winners will be announced. Twenty-eight artists are participating\, addressing their relationships with trees in 2D and 3D formats\, some employing wood materials which are reclaimed or formally crafted and some using ceramic\, textiles and functional design. All push the conversation between human-made and nature-made objects into one of collaborative revelation.\nShelby Perry\, a Wildlands Ecologist with Northeast Wilderness Trust will be giving a talk on Trees and Rewilding\, April 18 at 5pm. This event is free and open to all. The Gallery exhibit is open Tuesday through Saturday from 1:00-5:00pm.

SUMMARY:Amphibian Crossing Series
DESCRIPTION:Every spring\, amphibians migrate from forests to wetlands\, following a biological process that often returns them to the same vernal pools where they were born. Their route often traverses roads and they are hard to see by motorists on the dark\, wet nights during which they prefer to travel. This is where we come in – as amphibian “crossing guards”! \nWe’ll be offering a training event\, amphibian crossing kits\, and a night crossing event. Visit https://www.friendsofthemadriver.org/news/amphibian-crossing-series for more details. \nThis series is made possible by Friends of the Mad River\, MRV Libraries\, and North Branch Nature Center. \nQuestions? Please contact onome@friendsofthemadriver.org

Beyond a place for optimal viewing conditions teh MRV offers spectacular scenery and an opportunity to combine the experience with some awesome spring skiing.  The area will be positioned in the path of totality\, offering folks the chance to experience the eclipse in its most breathtaking form\, complete with the magical moments of totality when the moon fully covers the sun. \nEclipse Viewing in the MRV \n\n\nIn the path of totality: Yes\nPercentage of totality 100%\nDuration of totality: 1 minute\, 32 seconds\nEclipse Begins – Monday April 8\, 2024 at 2:14 pm\nMaximum – Monday April 8\, 2024 at 3:28 pm\n\n\nGiven the unparalleled opportunity to observe this natural wonder in such an idyllic setting\, demand for accommodations is predicted to be high. Visitors are encouraged  to book lodging as soon as possible. \nPlaces to Stay for the Eclipse\nWhat is a Solar Eclipse?\nThe solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between the Earth and the Sun\, blocking some or all of the Sun’s light from reaching the Earth’s surface. Depending on where you are located\, you may experience a partial or total solar eclipse. Experiencing a solar eclipse can be a once-in-a-lifetime event\, and many people travel to specific locations to witness them. In 2024\,  Vermont’s Mad River Valley will be in the path of totality for the solar eclipse. Meaning\, we will have a front row seat to the action! On April 8th\, 2024 all of Northern Vermont will experience a total eclipse of the sun\, make sure you are in the path of totality for the full experience! \nIf you are interested in viewing a solar eclipse\, it is important to take appropriate precautions to protect your eyes\, such as using special solar viewing glasses or watching the eclipse through a pinhole projector. It is also important to plan ahead and make sure you have a place to stay and a clear view of the sky!

SUMMARY:Total Eclipse For the Art
DESCRIPTION:An OPEN BARN event to support artists participating in a residency this summer \nDon’t miss seeing the upcoming full-occlusion solar eclipse! The Mad River Valley will be in the perfect path for viewing this celestial event\, and Stowell Barn is surrounded by a beautiful unobstructed vista that can’t be beat. Eclipse photographers looking for where to set up? Look no further! \nCome check out our recently-restored historic space and enjoy some light snacks\, good company\, games\, a celestially-themed playlist\, and a collaborative dance composition demo following the eclipse (no dance experience needed to participate). All are welcome! \nThis event is open to the public\, and will be ‘contribute what you can’ at the door/online. All contributions* will directly support dancers and choreographers participating in the CHIMERA Art Co-Lab hosted by Farmsprung Gatherings in July\, 2024. \nWe are opening the barn doors early this year for this special event: keep in mind that this is Vermont in early April\, and the barn is technically 3 season so it may be CHILLY! We have a patio heater for hand warming and are planning for some warm beverages\, but check the weather and dress accordingly. \nLimited parking on site on the grass\, with additional public parking at Common Road. \nRemember you shouldn’t look directly at the eclipse—bring protective eye-wear! We will have limited eclipse shades available. \n*Please note that financial contributions—although directly benefiting artists—are not tax deductible. \nA note re: accessibility–if you have specific needs please alert us ahead of time and we will do everything we can to accommodate you! We have portable ramps to make our barn space and dance floor accessible\, but the space is surrounded by grass which can be challenging for wheelchairs.

SUMMARY:Drag Story Hour
DESCRIPTION:Drag Story Hour (DSH) is just what it sounds like… \n…drag performers reading stories to children in libraries\, schools\, and bookstores. DSH captures the imagination and play of the gender fluidity of childhood and gives kids glamorous\, positive\, and unabashedly queer role models. In spaces like this\, kids are able to see people who defy rigid gender restrictions and imagine a world where people can present as they wish\, where dress up is real. \nEmoji Nightmare and Katniss Everqueer\, two of Vermont’s favorite queer performing artists\, will be sure to delight and captivate audience members of all ages as they share stories focused on individuality\, activism\, gender\, creativity\, expression\, and social responsibility. \nDSH was created by Michelle Tea and RADAR Productions in San Francisco in 2015. The Vermont Chapter of DSH was created by Emoji Nightmare and Nikki Champagne in 2017. In 2021\, Emoji joined the national board of directors for DSH. For more information on DSH\, visit DragStoryHour.org. \nThis event is funded by a grant from the Vermont Children’s Trust Foundation’s Samara Fund and is part of The Vermont Chapter’s 2024 Rural Outreach Program.
