DESCRIPTION:In a program featuring “Frostiana” by American composer Randall Thompson\, the Onion River Chorus will be presenting their winter concerts on Dec. 21st and 22nd. There will be a reception following the Sunday concert\, with proceeds to benefit the Montpelier Food Pantry. Onion River Chorus is happy to offer special admission pricing for this concert. Suggested admission is $25 or “pay what you can” at the door. Advance tickets are available at sevendaystickets.com for $25 only. As always\, 18 and under are free. \nThe 60-member chorus\, now directed by Richard Riley\, has presented unique programs for 45 years. In this concert\, the chorus presents a typically diverse program with not only “Frostiana”\, which is one of the most frequently-performed choral masterworks of the 20th century\, but also two masterworks from 2010 by the Latvian composer Erik Esenwalds. The concert will also include three settings of the text “Ave Maris Stella” (“Hail\, Star of the Sea”)\, as well as Thompson’s most famous work\, “Alleluia\,” first sung at the Tanglewood Music Festival in 1940. Lynnette Combs\, long time friend and accompanist of the Onion River Chorus\, will accompany the chorus on piano in “Frostiana” and other works. \n“This program will be a unique opportunity for those in the audience to travel musically to territory both near and far\,” says Riley. “I love the freshness of the poems by Robert Frost that underscore ‘Frostiana.’ We remember almost all of them\, but are reminded how timeless they remain.” In addition to music from the U.S. and Latvia\, the concert program will also take the audience to Italy and Norway. \nFor more info visit onionriverchorus.org or call 802.476.2541.

Tickets are available at https://www.elevachamberplayers.com or at the door. \nDragonBoot\, a quartet of vibrant and exceptionally talented young musicians\, poised at the brink of promising careers\, will perform music of two familiar composers\, and will also introduce the audience to the work of a contemporary American composer. The program will include Haydn’s String Quartet Op.33 No. 1\, Mozart’s String Quartet No. 21 in D – K575 and Caroline Shaw’s Three Essays for String Quartet. \nThe DragonBoot String Quartet includes violinists Cate Carson and Katya Moeller\, violist Sydney Whipple (an Eleva member) and cellist Lila Holyoke. Built on a foundation of deep musical relationships\, the members of this ensemble have fostered musical connections that have survived the test of time. Violinist Cate Carson and violist Sydney Whipple first played together at the California Summer Music Festival—over ten years ago. Cellist Lila Holyoke and violinist Katya Moeller have performed together in chamber ensembles for three consecutive years. Most recently\, Lila and Cate performed together for seven weeks\, sharing chamber works with children at Kneisel Hall. The DragonBoot String Quartet is the ultimate fusion of these avid chamber musicians\, finally coming together at The Juilliard School. They are currently in the Honors Chamber Music Program at Juilliard\, coaching with former Cavani Quartet member\, Merry Peckham and Juilliard Provost and violist\, Adam Meyer. \nThe Eleva Chamber Players is Central Vermont’s only professional string chamber orchestra and was founded in April of 2006 in Waterbury\, Vermont with the mission of elevating the human spirit through music. Eleva’s concerts feature fine musicianship and fascinating dialogue that is both educational and inspiring. The conductor-less orchestra operates using a collaborative process and is composed of professional musicians with distinguished international careers from throughout Vermont and the United States. In addition to its annual November concerts\, Eleva has conducted concert tours of Vermont wineries and various house concerts around the country.

Doug is a former member of MRVAS\, having served as an EMT for 9 years. He’s excited to share his musical talents to benefit the valuable services that MRVAS provides to our community. \nPlease join us on January 15\, 7 pm\, at Warren United Church to hear some great music and support our local ambulance service. \nConcerts for a Cause is an ongoing concert series that aims to bring music to the community while supporting local Vermont charities.
