SUMMARY:BUILDING AFFORDABILITY SPEAKER SERIES – AFFORDABLE HOUSING: UNDERSTANDING LOCAL AND GLOBAL APPROACHES WITH ANYA BRICKMAN RAREDON
DESCRIPTION:Affordable Housing: Understanding Local and Global Approaches with Anya Brickman Raredon \nDrawing from her experience in over 20 countries\, Anya Brickman Raredon will share examples of housing ecosystem analyses that have led to the development of programs\, policies\, and projects to increase access and affordability of housing around the world. Whether in the US\, an emerging economy\, or a post-disaster environment\, successful housing markets arise when the underlying value chains of supply and demand are synchronized to respectively produce houses (supply) and finance (demand) at compatible price points. Anya will describe how the Affordable Housing Institute uses a practical\, rigorous\, and comprehensive methodology to understand and evaluate a local housing market\, identify key levers for change\, and to design and implement new paradigm solutions for urgent affordable housing and urban development challenges.

SUMMARY:Sorrows + Sunshine- Grief Writing Workshop with Rachel Wylie at Firefolk Arts
DESCRIPTION:Open to All: Ages 13+\nApril 20th\n1 – 3 pm @ Firefolk Arts: 4424 Main St. Waitsfield\nPlease Register by Email:  firefolkarts@gmail.com \nFacilitator\, Rachel Wylie believes that story is a powerful tool for connection\, meaning-seeking\, healing\, and integrating the most beautiful and challenging parts of life. Grief can often feel very solitary\, but sharing our stories of sorrow with others helps bring light to the darkness. In the Sorrows & Sunshine workshop\, Rachel will guide participants through an explorative writing exercise designed to shine a warm light on our sorrows\, followed by optional story-telling. \nAbout Rachel\nRachel’s own apprenticeship to grief began in Feb 2020 when her father was diagnosed with ALS. During his dying process\, she started talking – and writing – about her experience navigating his disease and death (Where The Love Lies). Writing helped her make sense of the senseless\, helped her process the loss\, and begin to figure out how to hold her sorrow with the same honor as her love. \nWhat to expect:\nCreation of a communal grief altar\nWriting exercise\nOpportunity to tell your story to the group \nPlease bring:\nAn item\, picture\, or special offering for the altar. This can be something related to the sorrow you want to work with\, or something that supports/strengthens/inspires you.\nItems for comfort (snacks\, layers\, water\, etc) \nFacilitated by Rachel Wylie – Where The Love Lies — https://wherethelovelies.com/\nCost / Sliding Scale: $10 – $20

SUMMARY:Drag Story Hour
DESCRIPTION:Drag Story Hour (DSH) is just what it sounds like… \n…drag performers reading stories to children in libraries\, schools\, and bookstores. DSH captures the imagination and play of the gender fluidity of childhood and gives kids glamorous\, positive\, and unabashedly queer role models. In spaces like this\, kids are able to see people who defy rigid gender restrictions and imagine a world where people can present as they wish\, where dress up is real. \nEmoji Nightmare and Katniss Everqueer\, two of Vermont’s favorite queer performing artists\, will be sure to delight and captivate audience members of all ages as they share stories focused on individuality\, activism\, gender\, creativity\, expression\, and social responsibility. \nDSH was created by Michelle Tea and RADAR Productions in San Francisco in 2015. The Vermont Chapter of DSH was created by Emoji Nightmare and Nikki Champagne in 2017. In 2021\, Emoji joined the national board of directors for DSH. For more information on DSH\, visit DragStoryHour.org. \nThis event is funded by a grant from the Vermont Children’s Trust Foundation’s Samara Fund and is part of The Vermont Chapter’s 2024 Rural Outreach Program.

SUMMARY:MRV Memory Tree Lighting Ceremony
DESCRIPTION:The Mad River Valley Memory Tree lighting will make place on Friday\, December 8 a at 5 pm.  The Mad River Valley Memory Tree has long been a highlight to the annual illumination of the valley. At the event there will be music by the Songbird Project\, a fire dance and the reading of the names to be remembered.  The Memory Tree Lighting Ceremony will be recorded and aired later by Mad River Valley Television. \nHonor Your Memory Today!\n$5 each or 5 for $20\nThe Mad River Valley Memory Tree provides a way for community members to remember and honor a loved one\, event\, or anything close to your hearts and support a great cause too. At the tree lighting ceremony the bulb dedications are read. Each light dedication costs $5 with donations matched by the Winthrop H. Smith Jr. Family Foundation. All funds raised from the Memory Tree initiative are donated to the stewardMRV program that works to steward the MRV’s outdoor recreational access point. \nThe original concept was borrowed from the Saint Johnsbury Lions Club. Each year they would hold a tree lighting ceremony  where they would read the names of those who bought bulbs and for whom. After the Lions Club disbanded the Memory Tree tradition went away until Joan Wilson\, John Gallagher and Nancy and Jess Mobley revived the idea in 2013. Each year a different cause is selected as the beneficiary of the funds raised. \nHonor Your Memory Today!\n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Floodplains Workshop with Vermont DEC
DESCRIPTION:Are you curious about what a floodplain is and why you hear that term in almost every discussion on flooding and climate resilience? \nThen\, join Friends of the Mad River and Ned Swanberg of the Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation (VT DEC) to learn about what floodplains are\, why they are so important to health and safety\, and how the river and precipitation shapes the valley that we call home. Ned is a regional floodplain manager for Vermont Central\, and manages https://floodready.vermont.gov. \nThe workshop will hold at the Austin parcel\, which is also the location of an ongoing floodplain forest restoration project. We’ll learn about riverside soils\, plants\, and other signs to discern the health and vitality of the river and how it affects our lives. We’ll also learn from our local experts on the history of the land and see the progress of the ongoing restoration work. \nInterested? Email onome@friendsofthemadriver.org to register or with questions/concerns. \nPlease come dressed appropriately to be outdoors for 1-2 hours. \nDistance: 0.5 – 1 mile\nTerrain: Trail is mostly flat and consists of dirt trails covered in leaf litter or grass. Please let us know if there are ways we can accommodate your needs.

SUMMARY:Yestermorrow Fall 2023 Speaker Series: Yestermorrow’s Sustainable Sites Initiatives and Case Studies
DESCRIPTION:Yestermorrow’s Design/Build Curriculum would not be complete without including Best Management Practices of Site Construction. This speaker series shows the renewed interest that Yestermorrow has in teaching critical steps to people\, helping them become better stewards of the land. Wrapping up the Fall 2023 Speaker Series\, Britton will explain the Yestermorrow curriculum in its planning stages. He will discuss the motivation behind this education\, intended for those who work in fields of landscaping and excavation. He will illustrate specific examples on our campus and nearby in the Mad River Valley that present educational and ecological design challenges and opportunities. This summer has reminded us how climate change directly impacts our local communities. As we continue to expand the built environment\, we must focus on repairing our land\, which is reeling from over-use and misuse. We can start by reducing erosion from roofs\, driveways\, roads\, culverts\, and trails with the slowing\, spreading\, and sinking of water. \nJoin us in person in the Yestermorrow main studio or remotely via Zoom: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/84116999168 \n__________________________________________________________________________________________________________\nBritton Rogers\, Yestermorrow Executive Director\nWith a Bachelor of Architecture from UT Austin\, Britton practiced architecture and environmental design in several firms. After licensing and LEED accreditation\, Britton wanted more for the built environment\, which led him to pursue a Certificate in Sustainable Building and Design at Yestermorrow\, and a Master of Environmental Design from Yale. He examined urban and landscape history\, including the reuse of abandoned buildings and toxic industrial landscapes. After graduating\, Britton stayed at Yale to teach advanced design and urban history. In his practice today\, Britton focuses on renovations and restorations\, as well as designs for gardens and landscapes. He also writes about and photographs urban landscapes\, infrastructure\, and industrial relics. In addition to his practice and teaching\, Britton serves on the board of directors of several community- and ecologically-focused non-profit organizations in Vermont and Connecticut.

SUMMARY:Yestermorrow Fall 2023 Speaker Series: Storm Smart with Winooski Natural Resources Conservation District
DESCRIPTION:Raindrops on roses may be one of our favorite things but when lots of raindrops flow together they can become a powerful force that washes out driveways\, rips apart stream banks\, and carries trash and pollution into our rivers and lakes. A combination of heavier storms which drop more rain over a shorter time period\, as well as more developed lands\, roofs\, and compressed lawns that shed water more quickly has made Vermont’s raindrops a dubious challenge for water quality. \nStorm Smart homes use “green stormwater infrastructure” solutions like rain gardens\, rain barrels\, and water bars to slow down\, spread out\, and sink in rainfall. Keeping rain water onsite can help keep our rivers clean and clear\, and replenish groundwater that we all depend on. Solutions like tree plantings and raising the mower blade can also help grow wildlife habitat and capture carbon. And it can help you be a good neighbor too – water that stays on your property is water that is not washing away town roads or blowing out culverts in big storms. If we all make tiny improvements\, together we can grow a healthy and resilient Winooski Watershed. Storm Smart is a FREE program that provides education and technical assistance to homes to promote green stormwater infrastructure and other stormwater solutions for our watershed and wildlife. \nWNRCD’s Consevation Specialist Adelaide Dumm will present on the Storm Smart program and today’s solutions for community and household watershed management. \nJoin us in person in the Yestermorrow main studio or remotely via Zoom: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/88690412727\n_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ \nAdelaide Dumm joined the Winooski NRCD conservation team in May 2022 as our Conservation Specialist. Adelaide’s passion for conservation is unparalleled and is deeply rooted in her upbringing on her family farm in Central Pennsylvania. \nAdelaide has worked various jobs in the environmental conservation field including interning at the local water authority and Conservation Districts in PA where she developed an interest in water quality. Adelaide attended the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry (SUNY ESF) and graduated with a Bachelors in Natural Resources Management and a minor in Aquatic Resources management. In 2017\, she moved westward to work seasonally in the Tongass National Forest in Southeast Alaska as a fisheries biological technician with the United States Forest Service. Inspired to continue to develop her understanding of wildlife habitat conservation and participate in the scientific community\, Adelaide earned a Masters Degree in Natural Resources Conservation from Paul Smiths College in 2022. \nAdelaide relocated with her fiancé and dog from Alaska in 2018 and has been working with the Vermont Department of Forests\, Parks\, and Recreation as a state park manager for the past three years. Adelaide has dedicated time to volunteering as a cyanobacteria monitor with the Lake Champlain Committee and educating the public on water quality and watershed conservation. \nAdelaide looks forward to this next chapter with the WNRCD leading programs including Rethink Runoff Stream Team\, Trees for Streams\, and Storm Smart. Adelaide enjoys spending time in nature as a fly fisher\, kayaker\, hiker\, skier\, gardener\, and overall avid outdoor enthusiast. As a new mother she looks forward to embracing the opportunity to raise her son with her Fiancé in the Green Mountain State.

SUMMARY:Yestermorrow Fall 2023 Speaker Series: Ridge to River with Friends of the Mad River
DESCRIPTION:Ridge to River is a 5-town coalition working toward clean water and flood resilience in Vermont’s Mad River Valley. We discovered quickly that managing stormwater across the Valley is a critical strategy for reducing our vulnerability to flooding\, and we worked together for 2 years on a strategic process to explore this nuanced challenge\, our community\, and a range of possible strategies for building resilience. Come hear panelists Luke Foley and Ira Shadis speak about the growing program and goals for resilience in the Mad River Valley. \nJoin us in person or remotely via Zoom: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/89212586891\n_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ \nLuke Foley is the Climate and Engagement Manager for Friends of the Mad River. Luke has an extensive background as an educator\, having previously worked as an Experiential Learning Coordinator and Outdoor Educator at Northfield Middle High School. Prior to working in public schools\, Foley also worked as a wilderness instructor\, international travel guide\, and program director for several schools and programs in Vermont\, the western United States\, and around the world. He was the 2014 Vermont Teacher of the Year and a 2017 National Park Service Climate Resiliency Fellow. Most recently\, Luke received a 2019 Rowland Fellowship to pursue a project that looked to expand experiential learning opportunities in Vermont schools. In addition to his role with Friends of the Mad River\, Luke is an adjunct professor for Mt. Holyoke College and Castleton University\, as well as founder and owner of Frontiers Education\, a business which delivers professional development opportunities for teachers focused on wilderness expeditions\, place-based education\, and community-oriented student projects. Foley lives in Waitsfield with his wife\, Rachel\, a teacher at Fayston Elementary\, and his two children\, Nora and Tobin. In his free time\, Luke likes to run and bike our local trails\, swim and paddle in our rivers and lakes\, and use all types of skis to navigate the winter landscape. \nIra Shadis grew up in the arms of the Winooski River; home up in the headwaters\, school on the main stem\, and summer days swimming in the Mad. His professional life has focused on the cross section of environmental stewardship\, education\, and communication. These days he focuses on turning the Mad River Watershed into a sponge and building resilience into the landscape.

SUMMARY:Yestermorrow Fall 2023 Speaker Series: EXTREMOPHILE/ENVIRONMENTAL(ISM) with Ian Quate
DESCRIPTION:The Gowanus Canal of Brooklyn\, NY is considered a forsaken environment from a human perspective: the Superfund remediation plan is to dredge and cap with concrete. From 2013 until present our studies have shown the canal environment to be a thriving microbial ecosystem\, with lifeforms evolved to inhabit industrial ruins with embodied metabolic information relevant to future cleanups. At a time where human disturbance is a geological force\, our results further suggest we should redefine our relationships with lifeforms we live amongst\, with a responsibility for stewardship and reciprocity. These microscopic neighbors not only serve as a genetic catalog of bioremediation functions\, but open our imagination to new modes of what theorist Anna Tsing calls “collaborative survival” – of ways to live together on a planet modified by our civilization’s byproducts. \nJoin in person in the Yestermorrow main studio or remotely via Zoom: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/84227672054\n_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ \nIan is the director of Fruit Studio\, a design practice exploring the intentional ecology in constructed environments in far-fetched and longterm fashion. Ian earned his master of landscape architecture from RISD in 2011\, and has worked in design\, fabrication and horticulture in NYC\, PA\, NC and Australia.
