The BC Primer will be an all-day workshop held at the Mad River Glen @ the Cricket Club and on the mountain on Sunday\, November 10th. The course topics will help those who are newer to backcountry skiing/riding feel more comfortable going out into the deep woods of our region in search of untracked snow. More experienced skiers/riders will gain useful insights\, information\, tools\, and techniques for exploring mountains further afield. And all will certainly enjoy meeting and connecting with other BC enthusiasts in our community!

DESCRIPTION:Prepare for the unexpected with this fun\, hands-on introduction to wilderness medicine. If you like to take short trips relatively close to medical resources\, enjoy weekend family outdoor activities\, or recreate outdoors\, this course is for you. \nYou’ll learn the Patient Assessment System\, how to provide effective first aid treatments for injuries and illnesses common in the outdoors\, how to manage environmental emergencies\, and how to make appropriate evacuation decisions. You will spend half your time practicing skills and participating in realistic scenarios. \nNOLS Wilderness Medicine’s WFA course is approved by such organizations as the American Camp Association\, the United States Coast Guard\, as well as other state and federal agencies. \nThe class format involves lectures integrated with practical scenarios\, case studies\, and skills practice sessions. Attendance is required at all classes. \nScenarios and practice sessions will take place both inside and outside. Bring outdoor clothing appropriate for lying on the potentially wet\, snowy\, or cold ground while playing the role of both rescuer and patient. Stage (moulage) blood and make-up are used to enhance the realism of a scenario. The classroom environment generally lends itself to a pair of indoor comfy shoes.

DESCRIPTION:The new tools are here\, the new tools are here!\nJust in time for Trail Work Day – Sunday Oct 13 \nThe Mad River Valley is extremely fortunate to have access to one of the most incredible backcountry recreation opportunities in Vermont – the Phen Basin. As a chapter of the Catamount Trail Association\, MRVBC has committed to the care and management of access to this resource by adopting section 19S from the Battleground condominiums north to the Long Trail in Huntington Gap. This commitment includes organizing an annual Fall Trail Work day where volunteers have an opportunity to help ensure continued access by working to maintain the trail and its features. And just in time\, your membership dollars at work\, we have a suite of new tools to make light work (dare we say\, fun??!!) of clearing those ankle grabbers and pow line interrupters.\nWith several bridges\, a consistent slope\, unique natural features\, and beautiful views\, this section provides excellent access for non-motorized wintertime use. Come explore the trail while helping to keep it in good shape. This year work will focus on simple sight line clearing\, blazing\, and lopper work higher up the trail. If this is of interest – please bring your best yard-sale\, animal encounter\, or dawn patrol story and join us! You will hear great stories and intel from Trail Chief Alan Hammersmith and Board Secretary Kevin Russell (one of THE most knowledgeable folks in the Valley when it comes to our natural and trail spaces). DESCRIPTION:The Allen Clark Memorial Hill Climb — the annual grunt-fest that has fast become a rite of cycling passage in the Mad River Valley — is a grueling time trial that rises 1\,600 vertical feet in 6.2 miles\, from the intersection of Routes 100 and 17 to the top of Appalachian Gap. \nThe event is named in honor of long-time Mad River Valley resident\, Allen Clark. An avid cyclist who took up biking late in life\, he rode 2\,500-3\,000 annually in Vermont. Allen especially loved the challenge of the Appalachian Gap. This event is a tribute to Allen’s life and a fundraiser for Vermont Adaptive Ski & Sports\, an organization that meant a great deal to him. \nThe cost to register is $50 for adults and $30 for kids. \nBikers are encouraged to pre-register in advance of the event by clicking here \nRace-day registration will take place from 8:30-9:30AM in front of Stark Mountain Bike Works. A $10 surcharge per entry will be added to all day-of registrations. The road wasn’t constructed using the high-tech survey methods available today; instead\, the bed was laid out following the natural contours of the terrain. With an average pitch of roughly 10 percent over the last 2½ miles\, the climb is steeper (if shorter) than most climbs in the Tour de France. But steepness alone isn’t everything. The numerous changes in pitch and direction are really what make the App Gap climb a challenging and exhilarating ride\, both physically and mentally. \nWho Can Participate?\nCyclists and Unicyclists of all ages and abilities with any type of bicycle are invited to tackle the challenge of racing to the top of the Appalachian Gap. In keeping with the spirit of its namesake\, the late Allen Clark\, the Hill Climb is a celebration of cycling as a sport for people of all ages and physical abilities\, with any type of bicycle. Clark was a Mad River Valley cycling enthusiast and a regular bike-shop customer who didn’t take up the sport until he was in his sixties. He went on to log between 2\,000 and 3\,500 miles a year\, well into his 70s\, riding in all weather and in every month of the year. His favorite bike was a Bianchi hybrid\, fully rigged with racks and a huge storage trunk. The bike weighed more than 40 pounds — more than twice the weight of a typical racing bike. \nThe Ap Gap climb was one of Clark’s favorite rides\, as it is for almost every cyclist in the Mad River Valley. The climb can be difficult and even downright painful\, but getting to the top is always extraordinarily rewarding. Regardless of what level rider you might be\, riding the Gap is the ultimate fitness reality check. That’s why local riders come back to the Gap again and again\, in a kind of love/hate relationship. \nCategories\nPrizes will be awarded for both men and women\, 15 years and over. Junior riders\, under age 15\, will finish at Mad River Glen. \n\nUnder 15\n15-19\n20+\n40+\n50+\n60+\n70+\nAdaptive\nTandem\nUnicyclists\n\nVolunteers\nThe Allen Clark Hill Climb relies on volunteers to make this event happen. DESCRIPTION:The Mad River Valley is extremely fortunate to have access to one of the most incredible backcountry recreation opportunities in Vermont – the Phen Basin. As a chapter of the Catamount Trail Association\, MRVBC has committed to the care and management of access to this resource by adopting section 19S from the Battleground condominiums north to the Long Trail in Huntington Gap. This commitment includes organizing an annual Fall Trail Work day where volunteers have an opportunity to help ensure continued access by working to maintain the trail and its features. \nWith several bridges\, a consistent slope\, unique natural features\, and beautiful views\, this section provides excellent access for non-motorized wintertime use. Come explore the trail while helping to keep it in good shape. In addition to the work\, there is always a lot of laughs\, good stories\, and some pre-skiing stoke with parking-lot libations. This year work will focus on sight line clearing\, blazing\, water bars\, and lopper work higher up the trail.
