David was one of the original forum participants 10 years ago when the idea of backcountry chapters was born\, and he’s been engaged ever since. He will be sharing some words about the last decade if you’re a Vermont BC enthusiast you’ll want to be there. \nWe will also be officially launching the Vermont Backcountry Skiing Handbook. This is a brand new resource that provides detailed guidance for public and private land managers seeking to develop sustainable backcountry zones. It’s s direct result of that first forum 10 years ago\, and we will have printed copies for everyone to check out. SUMMARY:MRV Backcountry Coalition Trail Work Day
DESCRIPTION:If you enjoy working in the woods and have some time to spare\, please join the Valley’s CTA Trail Chiefs in the their annual effort to clear the Catamount Trail of blow-downs\, branches\, and brush. \nThe Mad River Valley is extremely fortunate to have access to one of the most incredible backcountry recreation opportunities in Vermont – the Phen Basin. As a chapter of the Catamount Trail Association\, MRVBC has committed to the care and management of access to this resource by adopting section 19S from the Battleground condominiums north to the Long Trail in Huntington Gap. This commitment includes organizing an annual Fall Trail Work day where volunteers have an opportunity to help ensure continued access by working to maintain the trail and its features. \nWith several bridges\, a consistent slope\, unique natural features\, and beautiful views\, this section provides excellent access for non-motorized wintertime use. Come explore the trail while helping to keep it in good shape. Last year was all about blowdown management (loppers\, handsaws\, and chainsaw work)\, water bar clearing (basic rake and dirt work)\, and replacing the deck on a bridge (simple carpentry). In addition to the work\, the team shared a lot of laughs\, good stories\, and some pre-skiing stoke with parking-lot libations. This year work will focus on simple sight line clearing\, blazing\, and lopper work higher up the trail.
