DESCRIPTION:You will engage in the hands-on process of designing and building a full-scale community project alongside a nonprofit partner or local community member. Class kicks off with a client meeting where students address a structural need. From there\, the  team will work within a budget\, propose and develop a design\, schedule the work\, and ultimately build the structure throughout the duration of this two-week class. \nA flagship Yestermorrow course that has yielded whimsical structures like the infamous Snail bus stop structure\, a mobile farm stand for Shelburne Farms\, and a trail shelter for the Mad River Path and more. Students are given the creative freedom to design a project that meets the unique needs of their client. As a result\, this course often produces unique and whimsical structures – a building style that Yestermorrow is known for. \nThis year\, we will be building a structure for the new Warren Dog Park. Make your mark on the community\, and provide shelter for your neighbors for years to come.

SUMMARY:Yestermorrow Fall 2023 Speaker Series: Storm Smart with Winooski Natural Resources Conservation District
DESCRIPTION:Raindrops on roses may be one of our favorite things but when lots of raindrops flow together they can become a powerful force that washes out driveways\, rips apart stream banks\, and carries trash and pollution into our rivers and lakes. A combination of heavier storms which drop more rain over a shorter time period\, as well as more developed lands\, roofs\, and compressed lawns that shed water more quickly has made Vermont’s raindrops a dubious challenge for water quality. \nStorm Smart homes use “green stormwater infrastructure” solutions like rain gardens\, rain barrels\, and water bars to slow down\, spread out\, and sink in rainfall. Keeping rain water onsite can help keep our rivers clean and clear\, and replenish groundwater that we all depend on. Solutions like tree plantings and raising the mower blade can also help grow wildlife habitat and capture carbon. And it can help you be a good neighbor too – water that stays on your property is water that is not washing away town roads or blowing out culverts in big storms. If we all make tiny improvements\, together we can grow a healthy and resilient Winooski Watershed. Storm Smart is a FREE program that provides education and technical assistance to homes to promote green stormwater infrastructure and other stormwater solutions for our watershed and wildlife. \nWNRCD’s Consevation Specialist Adelaide Dumm will present on the Storm Smart program and today’s solutions for community and household watershed management. \nJoin us in person in the Yestermorrow main studio or remotely via Zoom: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/88690412727\n_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ \nAdelaide Dumm joined the Winooski NRCD conservation team in May 2022 as our Conservation Specialist. Adelaide’s passion for conservation is unparalleled and is deeply rooted in her upbringing on her family farm in Central Pennsylvania. \nAdelaide has worked various jobs in the environmental conservation field including interning at the local water authority and Conservation Districts in PA where she developed an interest in water quality. Adelaide attended the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry (SUNY ESF) and graduated with a Bachelors in Natural Resources Management and a minor in Aquatic Resources management. In 2017\, she moved westward to work seasonally in the Tongass National Forest in Southeast Alaska as a fisheries biological technician with the United States Forest Service. Inspired to continue to develop her understanding of wildlife habitat conservation and participate in the scientific community\, Adelaide earned a Masters Degree in Natural Resources Conservation from Paul Smiths College in 2022. \nAdelaide relocated with her fiancé and dog from Alaska in 2018 and has been working with the Vermont Department of Forests\, Parks\, and Recreation as a state park manager for the past three years. Adelaide has dedicated time to volunteering as a cyanobacteria monitor with the Lake Champlain Committee and educating the public on water quality and watershed conservation. \nAdelaide looks forward to this next chapter with the WNRCD leading programs including Rethink Runoff Stream Team\, Trees for Streams\, and Storm Smart. Adelaide enjoys spending time in nature as a fly fisher\, kayaker\, hiker\, skier\, gardener\, and overall avid outdoor enthusiast. As a new mother she looks forward to embracing the opportunity to raise her son with her Fiancé in the Green Mountain State.

DESCRIPTION:This course has been offered since 1980 and is the heart of our curriculum. It is appropriate for a range of individuals\, from the person who wants to “do it all” to the person who simply wants to be informed enough to have meaningful and productive conversations with his or her architect and builder. Students will learn through hands-on construction projects\, studio sessions\, lectures\, slide shows\, house tours\, and discussion. The Home Design/Build Course will provide individuals with the fundamental skills and resources necessary for creating their dream home – be it new construction or renovation. This course is also a good introduction for those interested in pursuing an architecture or building career. At the end of this intensive course\, students typically leave with schematic floor plans\, a scale model\, and section and elevation drawings. They have gained a new awareness of design\, materials\, and the process of realizing a home that reflects their values and lifestyle.

DESCRIPTION:The Mad River Valley Libraries and the Central Vermont Council on Aging invite the community to attend a special screening of Cycle of Memory\, the new award-winning documentary about two siblings’ bicycle adventure to find the memories of their grandfather. Mel Schwartz\, lost to Alzheimer’s. are dealing with the impacts of this disease. Guided by old photographs of Mel’s 1945 trip\, they search for places aged by time. Cycle of Memory explores the importance of intergenerational connection\, healing painful pasts\, and leaving a meaningful time capsule for the future. There will be a short facilitated discussion after the film\, along with shared community resources to support those who are dealing with the impacts of this disease.

DESCRIPTION:You will engage in the hands-on process of designing and building a full-scale community project alongside a nonprofit partner or local community member. Class kicks off with a client meeting where students address a structural need. From there\, the  team will work within a budget\, propose and develop a design\, schedule the work\, and ultimately build the structure throughout the duration of this two-week class. \nA flagship Yestermorrow course that has yielded whimsical structures like the infamous Snail bus stop structure\, a mobile farm stand for Shelburne Farms\, and a trail shelter for the Mad River Path and more. Students are given the creative freedom to design a project that meets the unique needs of their client. As a result\, this course often produces unique and whimsical structures – a building style that Yestermorrow is known for. \nThis year\, we will be building a structure for the new Warren Dog Park. Make your mark on the community\, and provide shelter for your neighbors for years to come.

DESCRIPTION:If you enjoy working in the woods and have some time to spare\, please join the Valley’s CTA Trail Chiefs in the their annual effort to clear the Catamount Trail of blow-downs\, branches\, and brush. \nThe Mad River Valley is extremely fortunate to have access to one of the most incredible backcountry recreation opportunities in Vermont – the Phen Basin. As a chapter of the Catamount Trail Association\, MRVBC has committed to the care and management of access to this resource by adopting section 19S from the Battleground condominiums north to the Long Trail in Huntington Gap. This commitment includes organizing an annual Fall Trail Work day where volunteers have an opportunity to help ensure continued access by working to maintain the trail and its features. \nWith several bridges\, a consistent slope\, unique natural features\, and beautiful views\, this section provides excellent access for non-motorized wintertime use. Come explore the trail while helping to keep it in good shape. Last year was all about blowdown management (loppers\, handsaws\, and chainsaw work)\, water bar clearing (basic rake and dirt work)\, and replacing the deck on a bridge (simple carpentry). In addition to the work\, the team shared a lot of laughs\, good stories\, and some pre-skiing stoke with parking-lot libations. This year work will focus on simple sight line clearing\, blazing\, and lopper work higher up the trail. SUMMARY:Home Design/Build
DESCRIPTION:This course has been offered since 1980 and is the heart of our curriculum. It is appropriate for a range of individuals\, from the person who wants to “do it all” to the person who simply wants to be informed enough to have meaningful and productive conversations with his or her architect and builder. Students will learn through hands-on construction projects\, studio sessions\, lectures\, slide shows\, house tours\, and discussion. The Home Design/Build Course will provide individuals with the fundamental skills and resources necessary for creating their dream home – be it new construction or renovation. This course is also a good introduction for those interested in pursuing an architecture or building career. At the end of this intensive course\, students typically leave with schematic floor plans\, a scale model\, and section and elevation drawings. They have gained a new awareness of design\, materials\, and the process of realizing a home that reflects their values and lifestyle.

SUMMARY:Design/Build for Public Spaces
DESCRIPTION:You will engage in the hands-on process of designing and building a full-scale community project alongside a nonprofit partner or local community member. Class kicks off with a client meeting where students address a structural need. From there\, the  team will work within a budget\, propose and develop a design\, schedule the work\, and ultimately build the structure throughout the duration of this two-week class. \nA flagship Yestermorrow course that has yielded whimsical structures like the infamous Snail bus stop structure\, a mobile farm stand for Shelburne Farms\, and a trail shelter for the Mad River Path and more. Students are given the creative freedom to design a project that meets the unique needs of their client. As a result\, this course often produces unique and whimsical structures – a building style that Yestermorrow is known for. \nThis year\, we will be building a structure for the new Warren Dog Park. Make your mark on the community\, and provide shelter for your neighbors for years to come.
