DESCRIPTION:This course has been offered since 1980 and is the heart of our curriculum. It is appropriate for a range of individuals\, from the person who wants to “do it all” to the person who simply wants to be informed enough to have meaningful and productive conversations with his or her architect and builder. Students will learn through hands-on construction projects\, studio sessions\, lectures\, slide shows\, house tours\, and discussion. The Home Design/Build Course will provide individuals with the fundamental skills and resources necessary for creating their dream home – be it new construction or renovation. This course is also a good introduction for those interested in pursuing an architecture or building career. At the end of this intensive course\, students typically leave with schematic floor plans\, a scale model\, and section and elevation drawings. They have gained a new awareness of design\, materials\, and the process of realizing a home that reflects their values and lifestyle.

From there\, the  team will work within a budget\, propose and develop a design\, schedule the work\, and ultimately build the structure throughout the duration of this two-week class. \nA flagship Yestermorrow course that has yielded whimsical structures like the infamous Snail bus stop structure\, a mobile farm stand for Shelburne Farms\, and a trail shelter for the Mad River Path and more. Students are given the creative freedom to design a project that meets the unique needs of their client. As a result\, this course often produces unique and whimsical structures – a building style that Yestermorrow is known for. \nThis year\, we will be building a structure for the new Warren Dog Park. Make your mark on the community\, and provide shelter for your neighbors for years to come.

SUMMARY:Home Design/Build
DESCRIPTION:This course has been offered since 1980 and is the heart of our curriculum. It is appropriate for a range of individuals\, from the person who wants to “do it all” to the person who simply wants to be informed enough to have meaningful and productive conversations with his or her architect and builder. Students will learn through hands-on construction projects\, studio sessions\, lectures\, slide shows\, house tours\, and discussion. The Home Design/Build Course will provide individuals with the fundamental skills and resources necessary for creating their dream home – be it new construction or renovation. This course is also a good introduction for those interested in pursuing an architecture or building career. At the end of this intensive course\, students typically leave with schematic floor plans\, a scale model\, and section and elevation drawings. They have gained a new awareness of design\, materials\, and the process of realizing a home that reflects their values and lifestyle.

DESCRIPTION:You will engage in the hands-on process of designing and building a full-scale community project alongside a nonprofit partner or local community member. Class kicks off with a client meeting where students address a structural need. From there\, the  team will work within a budget\, propose and develop a design\, schedule the work\, and ultimately build the structure throughout the duration of this two-week class. \nA flagship Yestermorrow course that has yielded whimsical structures like the infamous Snail bus stop structure\, a mobile farm stand for Shelburne Farms\, and a trail shelter for the Mad River Path and more. Students are given the creative freedom to design a project that meets the unique needs of their client. As a result\, this course often produces unique and whimsical structures – a building style that Yestermorrow is known for. \nThis year\, we will be building a structure for the new Warren Dog Park. Make your mark on the community\, and provide shelter for your neighbors for years to come.

SUMMARY:MRV Biodiversity Series – Ecological Forest Management
DESCRIPTION:Ecological Forestry – Healthy Woods are Messy \nIn October\, the Biodiversity Series will continue with ‘Ecological Forestry presented by Ethan Tapper – the Chittenden County Forester. \nWhat does it mean to love a forest? \nVermont’s forests are highly-altered: as a result of our land use history\, non-native invasive pests and pathogens\, climate change\, and an array of other challenges and stressors\, our forests are generally young\, simple and degraded\, missing many critical habitats\, features and functions as they head into an uncertain future. As we consider what it means to care for forests at this moment in time\, it is clear that radical action is needed to protect their biodiversity and their ecological integrity\, and to help them build resilience and adaptability as they prepare for the pervasive influence of global change. \nEcological forestry is a reimagined vision of forest management – one that seeks to manage forests “like they manage themselves.” Ecological forestry is regenerative in nature\, using forest management to emulate natural disturbances and natural processes\, to help forests become more diverse\, complex and resilient and even to make Vermont’s young\, simple forests more like old growth forests. It does so while also providing local\, renewable resources – wood – which have global biodiversity and human-rights benefits. \nEthan will talk about what ecological forestry is\, what it looks like\, and why it is so crucial at this moment in time. \nAs the Chittenden County Forester for the Vermont Department of Forests\, Parks and Recreation\, Ethan Tapper advises private landowners\, municipalities\, conservation organizations\, foresters and loggers on the responsible stewardship of forestland\, administers Vermont’s Use Value Appraisal (or “Current Use”) program in the County\, and manages over 4\,500 acres of Community Forests. He writes a monthly column for 11 newspapers and a quarterly column in Northern Woodlands magazine\, maintains a YouTube channel\, and leads public events throughout New England which are attended by thousands of people each year. Ethan is the Northeast-Midwest State Foresters Alliance’s 2021 CFM Forester of the Year\, the 2021 recipient of the Vermont American Tree Farm System’s Education and Outreach Award\, 2020 recipient of Vermont Coverts’ James B. SUMMARY:Peecycling for Clean Water and Fertile Farms
DESCRIPTION:Julia Cavicchi\, Education Director of the Rich Earth Institute in Vermont\, will present a program about the paradigm-shifting practice of peecycling: reclaiming a “waste” as a resource to complete the food nutrient cycle. Human urine contains vital nutrients for growing crops. By reclaiming urine as an agricultural resource\, communities can prevent downstream pollution\, access an abundance of local fertilizer\, and conserve clean water. Peecycling kits will be available for interested participants to take home after the workshop.

SUMMARY:Yestermorrow Fall 2023 Speaker Series: Rain Gardens for Sustainable Hydrology with Holly Greenleaf
DESCRIPTION:Come learn how the simple green stormwater infrastructure of a rain garden can mimic pre-development hydrology to support sustainable sites. Rain gardens can offset the impacts of impervious surfaces (driveways\, roofs) and semi-impervious surfaces (lawns\, patios) that create large amounts of stormwater runoff\, causing erosion and pollution downstream. She specializes in native plantings\, green stormwater infrastructure\, bioengineering and lakeshore and riparian restoration\, and planting for pollinators and people. Designs are inspired by local place\, patterns\, plant communities and the people that inhabit these spaces with a goal of functional\, regenerative\, and beautiful landscapes that benefit soils\, water\, wildlife\, and way of life. Education and outreach work supports land stewards to restore their landscapes\, embrace a naturalistic approach\, and work with the intelligence of nature to create conditions for all to thrive and be resilient in an uncertain future. \nHolly was born and raised as a farmer and gardener in Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom. She studied Ecological Landscape Design\, Sustainable Horticulture\, and Studio Art as an undergraduate and graduate student at the University of Vermont\, earning her Bachelor of Arts in Environmental Studies and Master of Science in Plant and Soil Science. She has been working in the landscape and horticulture industry and practicing landscape design for a decade. She loves to be involved in all aspects of the design process and delights in the ever-changing colors\, textures\, structures\, scents\, and vitality of a living landscape.

SUMMARY:Home Design/Build
DESCRIPTION:This course has been offered since 1980 and is the heart of our curriculum. It is appropriate for a range of individuals\, from the person who wants to “do it all” to the person who simply wants to be informed enough to have meaningful and productive conversations with his or her architect and builder. Students will learn through hands-on construction projects\, studio sessions\, lectures\, slide shows\, house tours\, and discussion. The Home Design/Build Course will provide individuals with the fundamental skills and resources necessary for creating their dream home – be it new construction or renovation. This course is also a good introduction for those interested in pursuing an architecture or building career. At the end of this intensive course\, students typically leave with schematic floor plans\, a scale model\, and section and elevation drawings. They have gained a new awareness of design\, materials\, and the process of realizing a home that reflects their values and lifestyle.

SUMMARY:Design/Build for Public Spaces
DESCRIPTION:You will engage in the hands-on process of designing and building a full-scale community project alongside a nonprofit partner or local community member. Class kicks off with a client meeting where students address a structural need. From there\, the  team will work within a budget\, propose and develop a design\, schedule the work\, and ultimately build the structure throughout the duration of this two-week class. \nA flagship Yestermorrow course that has yielded whimsical structures like the infamous Snail bus stop structure\, a mobile farm stand for Shelburne Farms\, and a trail shelter for the Mad River Path and more. Students are given the creative freedom to design a project that meets the unique needs of their client. As a result\, this course often produces unique and whimsical structures – a building style that Yestermorrow is known for. \nThis year\, we will be building a structure for the new Warren Dog Park. Make your mark on the community\, and provide shelter for your neighbors for years to come.

DESCRIPTION:Built into the north west corner of the vonTrapp barn\, the Farm Store features all their certified organic farmstead cheeses and yogurts\, and pastured meats. They also carry products from over 40 different Vermont producers\, including charcuterie board fixings\, beer & wine\, organic produce\, ready-to-eat\, and pantry staples. They opened the farm store in 2020 as a way to share their love of quality\, local food – and  products – directly with the MRV community. \nEvery Wednesday is “Wine Down Wednesdays” where all their win offering are 15% off.
