SUMMARY:Home Design/Build
DESCRIPTION:This course has been offered since 1980 and is the heart of our curriculum. It is appropriate for a range of individuals\, from the person who wants to “do it all” to the person who simply wants to be informed enough to have meaningful and productive conversations with his or her architect and builder. Students will learn through hands-on construction projects\, studio sessions\, lectures\, slide shows\, house tours\, and discussion. The Home Design/Build Course will provide individuals with the fundamental skills and resources necessary for creating their dream home – be it new construction or renovation. This course is also a good introduction for those interested in pursuing an architecture or building career. At the end of this intensive course\, students typically leave with schematic floor plans\, a scale model\, and section and elevation drawings. They have gained a new awareness of design\, materials\, and the process of realizing a home that reflects their values and lifestyle.

SUMMARY:Waitsfield Development Review Board (2nd Tuesday)
DESCRIPTION:MEETINGS \nThe DRB meets on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of each month\, 7:00 PM\, at the Waitsfield Town Office. Members are urged to let staff know as early as possible if they will be unable to attend a scheduled meeting so arrangements can be made to ensure a quorum. \nAgendas and Minutes \nMeeting Calendar (2023) \n  \nDUTIES \nThe Waitsfield Development Review Board was established in 2007 by a resolution that transferred the development review functions of both the Planning Commission and the former Zoning Board of Adjustment to the new DRB.  The DRB’s responsibilities are laid out in both the Vermont State Statutes\, the Waitsfield Zoning Bylaws\, and the Waitsfield Subdivision Regulations. \nThe DRB performs an important and difficult job\, which is carried out by volunteers appointed by the Selectboard.  It is through this review of individual applications that the community’s vision\, goals\, policies\, and priorities–as expressed in the Waitsfield Town Plan and codified in our development regulations–are implemented.  At the same time\, DRB members and others participating in the process must respect due process\, the rights of applicants\, and the rights of the public to participate. \nThe DRB has the following duties (see 24 V.S.A. Section 4460): \n(1) Review of right-of-way or easement for land development without frontage as authorized in 24 V.S.A. 4412(3); (2) Review of land development or use within an historic district or with respect to historic landmarks as authorized in 24 V.S.A. 4414(1)(F)\n(3) Review of land development or use within a design control district as authorized in 24 V.S. A. 4414(1)(E);\n(4) Review of proposed conditional uses as authorized in 24 V.S. A. 4414(3);\n(5) Review of planned unit developments as authorized in 24 V.S.A. 4417;\n(6) Review of requests for waivers as authorized in 24 V.S.A. 4414(9);\n(7) Site plan review as authorized in 24 V.S.A. 4416;\n(8) Review of proposed subdivisions as authorized in 24 V.S.A. 4418;\n(9) Review of wireless telecommunications facilities as authorized in 24 V.S.A. 4414(12);\n(10) Appeals from a decision of the administrative officer pursuant to 24 V.S.A. 4465;\n(11) Review of requests for variances pursuant to 24 V.S.A. 4469; and\n(12) Any other reviews required by the bylaws.

SUMMARY:Yestermorrow Fall 2023 Speaker Series: Yestermorrow’s Sustainable Sites Initiatives and Case Studies
DESCRIPTION:Yestermorrow’s Design/Build Curriculum would not be complete without including Best Management Practices of Site Construction. This speaker series shows the renewed interest that Yestermorrow has in teaching critical steps to people\, helping them become better stewards of the land. Wrapping up the Fall 2023 Speaker Series\, Britton will explain the Yestermorrow curriculum in its planning stages. He will discuss the motivation behind this education\, intended for those who work in fields of landscaping and excavation. He will illustrate specific examples on our campus and nearby in the Mad River Valley that present educational and ecological design challenges and opportunities. This summer has reminded us how climate change directly impacts our local communities. As we continue to expand the built environment\, we must focus on repairing our land\, which is reeling from over-use and misuse. We can start by reducing erosion from roofs\, driveways\, roads\, culverts\, and trails with the slowing\, spreading\, and sinking of water. \nJoin us in person in the Yestermorrow main studio or remotely via Zoom: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/84116999168 \n__________________________________________________________________________________________________________\nBritton Rogers\, Yestermorrow Executive Director\nWith a Bachelor of Architecture from UT Austin\, Britton practiced architecture and environmental design in several firms. After licensing and LEED accreditation\, Britton wanted more for the built environment\, which led him to pursue a Certificate in Sustainable Building and Design at Yestermorrow\, and a Master of Environmental Design from Yale. He examined urban and landscape history\, including the reuse of abandoned buildings and toxic industrial landscapes. After graduating\, Britton stayed at Yale to teach advanced design and urban history. In his practice today\, Britton focuses on renovations and restorations\, as well as designs for gardens and landscapes. He also writes about and photographs urban landscapes\, infrastructure\, and industrial relics. In addition to his practice and teaching\, Britton serves on the board of directors of several community- and ecologically-focused non-profit organizations in Vermont and Connecticut.

SUMMARY:Design/Build for Public Spaces
DESCRIPTION:You will engage in the hands-on process of designing and building a full-scale community project alongside a nonprofit partner or local community member. Class kicks off with a client meeting where students address a structural need. From there\, the  team will work within a budget\, propose and develop a design\, schedule the work\, and ultimately build the structure throughout the duration of this two-week class. \nA flagship Yestermorrow course that has yielded whimsical structures like the infamous Snail bus stop structure\, a mobile farm stand for Shelburne Farms\, and a trail shelter for the Mad River Path and more. Students are given the creative freedom to design a project that meets the unique needs of their client. As a result\, this course often produces unique and whimsical structures – a building style that Yestermorrow is known for. \nThis year\, we will be building a structure for the new Warren Dog Park.
