SUMMARY:Socrates Cafe open to the public – Discussion Question: How do we “live now” while still respecting the past?
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the next Community Socrates Café\nJanuary 9th from 5:00 to 6:30 PM\nDiscussion Question: How do we “live now” while still respecting the past? \nStudents from Harwood’s Harkness Leadership class will be hosting a community Socrates Café on Thursday\, January 9th from 5:00 to 6:30 PM in the HU library. A Socrates Café is an opportunity for dialogue about timeless and timely questions that all human beings deal with. Rather than being a debate or a discussion\, a Socrates Café is a dialogue where participants are encouraged to listen to and learn from one another. \nThis form of discourse- and its focus on the search for knowledge- comes from the great philosopher Socrates\, who observed that “Wisdom Begins in Wonder.” These gatherings are open to all community members\, regardless of age\, experience\, or background. Harwood students who are experienced in leading Socratic Dialogues will facilitate the discussions. \nCommunity members of all ages are invited\, and refreshments will be provided. For questions and more information\, please contact Adam Sargent at asargent@huusd.org.

Tickets are available at https://www.elevachamberplayers.com or at the door. \nDragonBoot\, a quartet of vibrant and exceptionally talented young musicians\, poised at the brink of promising careers\, will perform music of two familiar composers\, and will also introduce the audience to the work of a contemporary American composer. The program will include Haydn’s String Quartet Op.33 No. 1\, Mozart’s String Quartet No. 21 in D – K575 and Caroline Shaw’s Three Essays for String Quartet. \nThe DragonBoot String Quartet includes violinists Cate Carson and Katya Moeller\, violist Sydney Whipple (an Eleva member) and cellist Lila Holyoke. Built on a foundation of deep musical relationships\, the members of this ensemble have fostered musical connections that have survived the test of time. Violinist Cate Carson and violist Sydney Whipple first played together at the California Summer Music Festival—over ten years ago. Cellist Lila Holyoke and violinist Katya Moeller have performed together in chamber ensembles for three consecutive years. Most recently\, Lila and Cate performed together for seven weeks\, sharing chamber works with children at Kneisel Hall. The DragonBoot String Quartet is the ultimate fusion of these avid chamber musicians\, finally coming together at The Juilliard School. They are currently in the Honors Chamber Music Program at Juilliard\, coaching with former Cavani Quartet member\, Merry Peckham and Juilliard Provost and violist\, Adam Meyer. \nThe Eleva Chamber Players is Central Vermont’s only professional string chamber orchestra and was founded in April of 2006 in Waterbury\, Vermont with the mission of elevating the human spirit through music. Eleva’s concerts feature fine musicianship and fascinating dialogue that is both educational and inspiring. The conductor-less orchestra operates using a collaborative process and is composed of professional musicians with distinguished international careers from throughout Vermont and the United States. In addition to its annual November concerts\, Eleva has conducted concert tours of Vermont wineries and various house concerts around the country.

DESCRIPTION:Mad River Valley Arts (Mad Arts) presents Lisa Dimondstein\, Julie Parker and Sandra Shenk in Abstract^2. \nThese three women photographers are dedicated to radicalizing the photo as image. \nThey abstract from a pre-existing abstract sculpture with the aim to capture the essential properties and relationships of the original abstract concept\, and in doing so they remove themselves from any context or specific content or representation. The process involves eliminating any reference to real-world objects or situations and to focus only on the inherent structures and relationships. \nThe Cold Hollow Sculpture Park\, in Enosburg Falls\, has over 70 large abstract sculptures by renowned artist David Stromeyer. SUMMARY:Abstract^2
The photographs of Lisa\, Julie and Sandra\nare inventive abstractions from David’s sculpture. They utilize an in-camera multiple exposure technique to explore the intricate relationship between color\, texture\, movement\, line and form.
