SUMMARY:Home Design/Build
DESCRIPTION:This course has been offered since 1980 and is the heart of our curriculum. It is appropriate for a range of individuals\, from the person who wants to “do it all” to the person who simply wants to be informed enough to have meaningful and productive conversations with his or her architect and builder. Students will learn through hands-on construction projects\, studio sessions\, lectures\, slide shows\, house tours\, and discussion. The Home Design/Build Course will provide individuals with the fundamental skills and resources necessary for creating their dream home – be it new construction or renovation. This course is also a good introduction for those interested in pursuing an architecture or building career. At the end of this intensive course\, students typically leave with schematic floor plans\, a scale model\, and section and elevation drawings. They have gained a new awareness of design\, materials\, and the process of realizing a home that reflects their values and lifestyle.

SUMMARY:Design/Build for Public Spaces
DESCRIPTION:You will engage in the hands-on process of designing and building a full-scale community project alongside a nonprofit partner or local community member. Class kicks off with a client meeting where students address a structural need. From there\, the  team will work within a budget\, propose and develop a design\, schedule the work\, and ultimately build the structure throughout the duration of this two-week class. \nA flagship Yestermorrow course that has yielded whimsical structures like the infamous Snail bus stop structure\, a mobile farm stand for Shelburne Farms\, and a trail shelter for the Mad River Path and more. Students are given the creative freedom to design a project that meets the unique needs of their client. As a result\, this course often produces unique and whimsical structures – a building style that Yestermorrow is known for. \nThis year\, we will be building a structure for the new Warren Dog Park. Make your mark on the community\, and provide shelter for your neighbors for years to come.

SUMMARY:MRV Backcountry Coalition Trail Work Day
DESCRIPTION:If you enjoy working in the woods and have some time to spare\, please join the Valley’s CTA Trail Chiefs in the their annual effort to clear the Catamount Trail of blow-downs\, branches\, and brush. \nThe Mad River Valley is extremely fortunate to have access to one of the most incredible backcountry recreation opportunities in Vermont – the Phen Basin. As a chapter of the Catamount Trail Association\, MRVBC has committed to the care and management of access to this resource by adopting section 19S from the Battleground condominiums north to the Long Trail in Huntington Gap. This commitment includes organizing an annual Fall Trail Work day where volunteers have an opportunity to help ensure continued access by working to maintain the trail and its features. \nWith several bridges\, a consistent slope\, unique natural features\, and beautiful views\, this section provides excellent access for non-motorized wintertime use. Come explore the trail while helping to keep it in good shape. Last year was all about blowdown management (loppers\, handsaws\, and chainsaw work)\, water bar clearing (basic rake and dirt work)\, and replacing the deck on a bridge (simple carpentry). In addition to the work\, the team shared a lot of laughs\, good stories\, and some pre-skiing stoke with parking-lot libations. This year work will focus on simple sight line clearing\, blazing\, and lopper work higher up the trail. SUMMARY:Yestermorrow Fall 2023 Speaker Series: Ridge to River with Friends of the Mad River
DESCRIPTION:Ridge to River is a 5-town coalition working toward clean water and flood resilience in Vermont’s Mad River Valley. We discovered quickly that managing stormwater across the Valley is a critical strategy for reducing our vulnerability to flooding\, and we worked together for 2 years on a strategic process to explore this nuanced challenge\, our community\, and a range of possible strategies for building resilience. Come hear panelists Luke Foley and Ira Shadis speak about the growing program and goals for resilience in the Mad River Valley. \nJoin us in person or remotely via Zoom: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/89212586891\n_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ \nLuke Foley is the Climate and Engagement Manager for Friends of the Mad River. Luke has an extensive background as an educator\, having previously worked as an Experiential Learning Coordinator and Outdoor Educator at Northfield Middle High School. Prior to working in public schools\, Foley also worked as a wilderness instructor\, international travel guide\, and program director for several schools and programs in Vermont\, the western United States\, and around the world. He was the 2014 Vermont Teacher of the Year and a 2017 National Park Service Climate Resiliency Fellow. Most recently\, Luke received a 2019 Rowland Fellowship to pursue a project that looked to expand experiential learning opportunities in Vermont schools. In addition to his role with Friends of the Mad River\, Luke is an adjunct professor for Mt. Holyoke College and Castleton University\, as well as founder and owner of Frontiers Education\, a business which delivers professional development opportunities for teachers focused on wilderness expeditions\, place-based education\, and community-oriented student projects. Foley lives in Waitsfield with his wife\, Rachel\, a teacher at Fayston Elementary\, and his two children\, Nora and Tobin. In his free time\, Luke likes to run and bike our local trails\, swim and paddle in our rivers and lakes\, and use all types of skis to navigate the winter landscape. \nIra Shadis grew up in the arms of the Winooski River; home up in the headwaters\, school on the main stem\, and summer days swimming in the Mad. His professional life has focused on the cross section of environmental stewardship\, education\, and communication. These days he focuses on turning the Mad River Watershed into a sponge and building resilience into the landscape.

Students will learn through hands-on construction projects\, studio sessions\, lectures\, slide shows\, house tours\, and discussion. The Home Design/Build Course will provide individuals with the fundamental skills and resources necessary for creating their dream home – be it new construction or renovation. This course is also a good introduction for those interested in pursuing an architecture or building career. At the end of this intensive course\, students typically leave with schematic floor plans\, a scale model\, and section and elevation drawings. They have gained a new awareness of design\, materials\, and the process of realizing a home that reflects their values and lifestyle.

SUMMARY:Design/Build for Public Spaces
DESCRIPTION:You will engage in the hands-on process of designing and building a full-scale community project alongside a nonprofit partner or local community member. Class kicks off with a client meeting where students address a structural need. From there\, the  team will work within a budget\, propose and develop a design\, schedule the work\, and ultimately build the structure throughout the duration of this two-week class. \nA flagship Yestermorrow course that has yielded whimsical structures like the infamous Snail bus stop structure\, a mobile farm stand for Shelburne Farms\, and a trail shelter for the Mad River Path and more. Students are given the creative freedom to design a project that meets the unique needs of their client. As a result\, this course often produces unique and whimsical structures – a building style that Yestermorrow is known for. \nThis year\, we will be building a structure for the new Warren Dog Park. Make your mark on the community\, and provide shelter for your neighbors for years to come.
