SUMMARY:John Anderson Exhibit at MRV Arts
DESCRIPTION:What’s the big idea? As a freshman in college\, my first grade on a paper was a D-\nminus. When I spoke to the professor about my failure\, he told me I knew the\nmaterial\, the facts\, but had no Big Idea. This was a huge lesson then and has\nremained so ever since. \nConcept\, line and space drive the inquiry in my creative practice\, both as an architect\nand as an artist. In my work\, both line and space are constructed to serve an imagined — even\nirrational — beginning (The Big Idea). A conceptual narrative takes shape\, a backstory\nmight develop\, a fantasy or a metaphor might direct the path of the project. As I\nproceed in my design process a kind of acceptance of a new reality starts to inform\nme and a dialogue of choices and decisions take off.

SUMMARY:Community Learning Session: Effects of trails on wildlife
DESCRIPTION:Interested in learning about the effect of trails on wildlife? Join the Mad River Valley Conservation and Recreation Visioning (CRV) Team for our second Community Learning Session! We’ll be gathering on Tuesday\, February 6th\, from 6 – 8 pm at the Valley Players Theater in Waitsfield to hear from Meredith Naughton\, a Wildlife Biologist with the Green Mountain-Finger Lakes National Forest. \nNaughton’s primary roles with the NF are to manage and protect sensitive species\, and to balance the multiple uses of public land with ecological protection. Her graduate work at UVM’s Field Naturalist Program was a collaboration with Vermont’s Agency of Natural Resources to research the effect of recreational trails on wildlife. She has worked in ecological mapping\, on research with a variety of wildlife species\, and in trail building. \nThese Community Learning Sessions are intended to help the Valley community build a shared foundation as we move forward with the work of CRV: developing\, through an inclusive process\, a set of maps\, shared goals\, guiding principles\, and best practices that together will provide a well-supported vision for balancing ecological integrity with recreation and trails across the Valley. With questions contact Emily Friedman madrivercrv@gmail.com

SUMMARY:Kandahar Mountain Race
DESCRIPTION:A race of a bygone era\, the Kandahar channels the spirit of full mountain races that were once commonplace on the racing circuit and at MRG. The last version held in the 1980s began on Creamery\, descended onto Moody’s\, before taking on (Grand) Canyon. At the bottom of Canyon\, racers went straight across Easy Way\, over the cliff on One Way\, and over S-Turn Cliff onto Lower Periwinkle and finished by the base of the Double. Whew! Our modern version is a bit more modest but will still reward those who can ski gates as well as terrain on the trail. The trail combination and exact set to get from the start to the finish are dependent on snow depth and conditions. Please see the race flyer (when available) for additional course details. \nDetails: \nField Limit: 75 racers \nAge requirement: 10 years old or older as of January 1st\, 2024 \nAthlete Lift: Tentatively 7:30 am \nRace Begins: Tentatively 8:00 am \nAwards: by age group and gender \nDisclaimer: Weather and conditions dependent\, no refunds on entry fee in the event of cancellation. We reserve the right to change or modify any of the perimeters of the race including but not limited to start time\, location\, course\, finish and awards in the interest of event security. \nProceeds from this event go to benefit the Mad River Glen Race Club and are non-refundable. \nThe MRG Racing Triple Crown combines three celebrated legacy events and crowns an overall category champions! \n\n\n\nThe Family Tournament is a family-friendly event where a competitor’s result is added together with other family members’ individual results to complete scoring and celebrate the fastest family combo.\nThe storied Kandahar is MRG’s modern version of a full mountain ski race. It rewards those who can ski gates as well as terrain and conditions on the trail.\nThe Rockefeller Challenge is a test of fearlessness and speed where competitors tuck straight downhill and glide uphill to find the skier who goes the furthest.\n\n\n\nCombine and register for all three events and save! \nA valid lift ticket or season pass is required. Lift ticket not included in the entry fee. \nAges 10 & up as of 1/1/24. You must complete a registration for each family member who will be racing. Please log in below (if you are already in MRG’s system) or create a new account for each racer. \nDisclaimer: Weather and conditions dependent. There are no refunds on the entry fee for any reason\, including in the event of date change\, cancellation\, or inability to participate. We reserve the right to change or modify any of the perimeters of the race including but not limited to start time\, date\, location\, course\, finish and awards in the interest of event security.
