Kate is the author of six picture books and two poetry collections\, garnering awards such as an American Library Association Notable Book and a New York Times Best Illustrated Book. She currently lives in Brooklyn with her family.

SUMMARY:Tuesday Tunes: Bloodroot Gap
DESCRIPTION:Formed after a serendipitous jam session at a Vermont bluegrass festival\, Bloodroot Gap is a musical collaboration between brothers Rob and Jim McCuen (Swing Noire)\, Freeman Corey (Catamount Crossing\, Big Spike Bluegrass) and Jake Munson. \nCorey\, a fiddle player who grew up on a dairy farm in Benson\, is the son of a fine\, old-time fiddler. He started playing at age 10\, learning hundreds of Irish\, Scottish and French-Canadian fiddle tunes from his father. Corey has become one of Vermont’s most sought-after traditional fiddlers\, gracing the stage with Bob Amos and Catamount Crossing\, Big Spike Bluegrass\, The Haymakers and Spare Parts among countless other notable groups and musicians. \nThe McCuen Brothers have been performing side-by-side for nearly 30 years\, founding the bands Wiley Dobbs\, Acoustic Undermind\, and Swing Noire\, and sharing the stage with the likes of Frank Vignola\, Jamie Masefield\, Charlie Hunter and Doug Perkins. The brothers provide tight vocal harmonies and rhythmic accompaniment\, as only twins can. Rob dazzles audiences with his fluid solos on mandolin and guitar\, while Jim holds down the low end on upright bass.

They are coordinating their efforts under the banner of the Mad River Valley Green Valley Rally. \nVermont’s annual Green Up Day takes place on Saturday\,May 4\, 2024 with the Green Valley Rally being the epicenter for all activities here in the MRV. They will provide separate clear bags for these cans and ask that people bring the bags back to the Welcome Center. They can also bring refundable cans and bottles back to the tent. Organizers will redeem the cans and donate all funds to the Mad River Valley Interfaith Council\, which serves neighbors in need. \nVOLUNTEER JOB FAIR\nStarting at noon and running through 2 p.m. there will be a BBQ for Green Up Day and stewardMRV volunteers. During that time there will also be a stewardMRV volunteer job fair. People can learn more about other conservation and stewardship opportunities. Representatives from various local organizations involved in stewardship in The Valley will be on hand to share information about volunteer opportunities. Those interested can look into becoming a stewardMRV site steward\, a Friends of the Mad River Watch volunteer\, a Mad River Path volunteer or even help out with the Mad River Valley Recreation District. \nWasted Portalet Demo\nCheck out the new Wasted portalets that will be used at stewardMRV sites around the MRV this year. There will also be a sample of the Wasted Off-Grid toilets we will be testing out this season. \nTIRE RECYCLING\nThe Mad River Resource Management Alliance (MRRMA) is collecting tires at the Earthwise Transfer Station on Green Up Day from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Those who find a tire along a roadside can bring it to the transfer station for recycling free of charge. To recycle personal tires\, the MRRMA will process those (with or without rims) for $5 each. \nVOLUNTEER BBQ\nThere will be a BBQ for all Green Up day volunteers to come celebrate our collective efforts. DESCRIPTION:Affordable Housing: Understanding Local and Global Approaches with Anya Brickman Raredon \nDrawing from her experience in over 20 countries\, Anya Brickman Raredon will share examples of housing ecosystem analyses that have led to the development of programs\, policies\, and projects to increase access and affordability of housing around the world. Whether in the US\, an emerging economy\, or a post-disaster environment\, successful housing markets arise when the underlying value chains of supply and demand are synchronized to respectively produce houses (supply) and finance (demand) at compatible price points. Anya will describe how the Affordable Housing Institute uses a practical\, rigorous\, and comprehensive methodology to understand and evaluate a local housing market\, identify key levers for change\, and to design and implement new paradigm solutions for urgent affordable housing and urban development challenges.
