SUMMARY:Writing Workshop Series: Spring Equinox Inaugural Session
DESCRIPTION:Friends of the Mad River announces a new writers’ workshop series: an opportunity for our community to gather and cultivate an attentiveness to place through a ritualized creative writing practice. Each session will be guided by an author from the Vermont literary community\, who will come to the group with a meaningful passage of text which will then serve as a touchstone for an hour or so of independent writing time. \nThese sessions\, seven total\, will be scheduled around the rhythm of the natural seasons: beginning with the spring equinox and ending with the fall equinox. Guest authors will include Sydney Lea\, the former poet laureate of Vermont; Sean Prentiss\, author and professor at Norwich; Noah Warren\, creative writing professor at UVM; and many more. \nThese seven sessions will hopefully culminate in some kind of informal community “zine” or portfolio\, featuring our participants’ work over the course of the year. You can sign up for this event as a full “series\,” which is recommended\, or you can sign up for individual sessions as your schedule allows. No professional experience with creative writing is necessary: simply come with a pen and an open heart. \nPlease stay tuned for forthcoming dates and venues. The first session will be held at Moretown Library on March 20th\, and will feature Prof. Sean Prentiss\, author of Finding Abbey: A Search for Edward Abbey and His Hidden Desert Grave (2015). \nYou can register for this first event\, or for the entire series\, here: https://forms.gle/14PqtBCJ4UUqAqxF8 \nPlease consider supporting the work of our guest authors with a recommended $30 donation per session\, but don’t hesitate to come for free\, if you need to.

SUMMARY:The Flood Safety Act and Beyond: Statewide and Local Efforts to Address Flooding in the Winooski Watershed
DESCRIPTION:Join regional organizations for a virtual conversation on Wednesday\, March 11th at 6:00pm to hear about actions the state and local organizations are taking to reduce flood risk\, improve water quality\, and protect our communities. \nThis event will also provide information on Vermont’s Flood Safety Act\, which is designed to address flood risk through a watershed-wide approach. Planning for resilience now is crucial in preventing further loss of life and property in future storms. This event will help towns and community members understand what the implementation of statewide river corridor protections means for their town and provide time to answer questions related to the Act. \nAll community members are welcome and encouraged to attend! \nPlease register in advance of this meeting and a link to join will be provided to your email.

SUMMARY:Winter Wildlife Tracking Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Each and every organism leaves behind a trace of its presence\, the history of its life written upon the landscape. In this class\, you’ll be introduced to basic tracking skills and concepts such as clear print identification\, gait & track patterns\, animal sign\, as well as techniques to develop and further your skills of tracking. The workshop will be structured in two halves: the first half will cover tracking fundamentals at an approachable pace while the second half will venture further afield\, practicing skills and deepening the knowledge gained. \nThis is a great class for anyone who wishes to deepen their experience with the natural world. All ages (children accompanied by an adult) are welcome. \nRegistration is required! This event has a capacity of about 20 people\, so attendees need to register ahead of time to secure their spot. Register at https://forms.gle/UJDEGqt9efr2JcN99. \nSuggested donation: $30\nPlease consider supporting Friends of the Mad River\, as well as Ondatra Adventures\, with a $30 suggested donation. Pay what you can: any amount helps us work towards our mission of a healthy and resilient watershed. SUMMARY:Climb It for Climate Uphill Race!
DESCRIPTION:Co-sponsored by MRVBC and Friends of the Mad River:\nFirst ever Uphill Race at Mount Ellen! \nPart of the expanding Climb It For Climate series\, this is an inclusive\, friendly competition to celebrate winter\, our watershed\, and this incredible landscape. If you have ever thought of trying an uphill race but felt intimidated\, this is the one to start with! We are working with Sugarbush to offer a route that is more approachable for the average uphill touring participant. Previous experience is highly recommended. \nhttps://www.friendsofthemadriver.org/events.html\nhttps://www.skireg.com/climb-it-for-climate-uphill-race-1 \nAll funds raised during January will go towards hosting a Tropical Storm Irene 15th Anniversary Event Series. These events will help our community better understand why we are experiencing more flood events\, what changes we have made as a community to address concerns\, and how we can all work together to ensure a more flood resilient future. \nOur organizations are all about celebrating our winter landscape and helping people connect with our watershed\, as well as one another. This event is not only about who can climb the most peaks\, log the most miles\, or get up the mountain the fastest. It is about creating community. \nAt the après\, we will also be recognizing the Uphill Challenge fundraising participants in a range of categories that celebrate community\, fun\, and creativity. Keep an eye out for more about the February and March fundraising efforts\, as well as the Feb 28 uphill race and the March 28 uphill rally. \nPlease remember\, we are able to host this fundraising event with the support of Sugarbush and Mad River Glen. It is vital that we all are good stewards of these mountains and follow each mountain’s uphill policies! Easily found on their websites – please check the snow reports every time you go.

SUMMARY:Birds & Your Buffer Landowner Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Are you curious how you could improve the health and quality of your land? Join Friends of the Mad River and Audubon Vermont for a landowner workshop\, designed for those interested in learning more about land stewardship\, especially in the context of bird habitat and river systems. \nDuring this workshop\, we will explore a landowner’s property that was planted with 1\,200 native trees and shrubs last year as part of ongoing riparian restoration efforts. As we walk and talk\, we will explore the connection between river dynamics\, land management\, bird habitat\, and restoration work. We will learn more about how riparian buffers and upland forests provide valuable habitat for birds as well as protect water quality and river health. \nWe will hear expertise and insights from:\n– Ira Shadis\, Executive Director\, Friends of the Mad River\n– Mark LaBarr\, Conservation Program Manager\, Audubon Vermont\n– Macie Broussard\, Senior Conservation Associate\, Audubon Vermont \nThe event will go on rain or shine\, so we suggest wearing appropriate weather clothing. In the event of rain\, there will be a gathering place out of the elements provided. \nThere is a limited number of spots available for this workshop\, so please register ahead of time. Find registration at https://tinyurl.com/birdsbuffer. To respect the privacy of the landowner\, we will contact you with specifics about the location of the workshop at the email you use to register.

SUMMARY:Dam It: Partnering with Beavers to Heal the Planet
DESCRIPTION:Join Friends of the Mad River for the next installment of our Climate & Ecology Expert Series as we welcome author and environmental journalist Ben Goldfarb for his presentation “Dam It: Partnering with Beavers to Heal the Planet”. Register for this virtual event at https://tinyurl.com/fmrbeaver. \nIn his book “Eager: The Surprising\, Secret Life of Beavers and Why They Matter”\, Ben Goldfarb reveals that our modern conception of a healthy ecosystem is wrong\, distorted by the fur trade that once eliminated millions of beavers from North America’s waterways. The consequences of losing beavers were profound: ponds drained\, wetlands dried up\, and species from salmon to swans lost vital habitat. Today\, a growing coalition of “Beaver Believers”—including scientists\, farmers\, and passionate citizens—recognizes that ecosystems with beavers are far healthier than those without them. From the Nevada deserts to the Scottish highlands\, Believers are hard at work restoring these industrious rodents to their former haunts. In his talk\, Ben will discuss the history and biology of this world-changing species; how beavers can help us fight drought\, flooding\, wildfire\, and climate change; and how we can coexist with this challenging but vital rodent. \nAbout the speaker: Ben Goldfarb is an environmental journalist whose work has appeared in National Geographic\, the Atlantic\, Smithsonian Magazine\, and many other publications\, and has twice been anthologized in the “Best American Science & Nature Writing”. His most recent book\, “Crossings: How Road Ecology Is Shaping the Future of Our Planet”\, was named one of the best books of 2023 by the New York Times\, and received the Rachel Carson Award for Excellence in Environmental Writing and the Banff Book Competition’s Grand Prize. His previous book\, “Eager: The Surprising\, Secret Life of Beavers and Why They Matter”\, won the PEN/E.O. Wilson Literary Science Writing Award. He lives in Colorado with his wife\, Elise\, and his dog\, Kit — which is\, of course\, what you call a baby beaver.
