SUMMARY:MRVBC end of season pop up tour and tailgate!
DESCRIPTION:We’ve nailed down the date – this Monday March 30 – so grab your sunscreen and skins for one last hurrah! We’ll pop up the MRVBC tent and fire up the grill to serve up some burgers and dogs – you bring your friends\, stories\, and stoke. \nThis will be a great chance to hear about all that MRVBC has going on: a new BC zone\, a new youth program\, our slot at Lawson’s as a SIP recipient\, and of course all the events and workshops we will serve up again next year.  Want to get involved or give feedback to help us shape sustainable human powered winter recreation??  Come on out and hang with us!  If you plan to join the group on the uphill tour\, please email Keith  (Keith Berkelhamer berkelhamerkeith@gmail.com) for the details.  Otherwise just show up in the parking lot starting around 5pm. \nAnd a huge shout out to Sugarbush\, one of our amazing sponsors who has supported and hosted so many of our events season over season!

SUMMARY:Climb It for Climate Uphill Series Jan-March
DESCRIPTION:Co-sponsored by MRVBC and Friends of the Mad River:\nLooking for a New Year’s Resolution that keeps you motivated and helps you contribute to a healthier and more resilient watershed? \nStarting January 1st\, join us for our first annual Climb It For Climate Uphill Challenge. This is a season long challenge focused on helping you make the most of our lovely Vermont winter. Keep track of your uphill tours – miles\, elevation\, and distance- and see if you can reach your personal goals for ski tours this season. \nWhile you are at it\, help us fundraise money for climate resilience education and projects in the Mad River Valley. Family and friends can easily donate using our platform\, and you can choose whether those donations are based upon the number of times you get outside or just given to support the cause. \nAll funds raised during January will go towards hosting a Tropical Storm Irene 15th Anniversary Event Series. These events will help our community better understand why we are experiencing more flood events\, what changes we have made as a community to address concerns\, and how we can all work together to ensure a more flood resilient future. \nEvent Details:\nJanuary 1st thru March 28th\, 2026 \nRegistration: https://www.skireg.com/climb-it-for-climate-uphil-challenge \nFundraising: https://www.pledgereg.com/climb-it-for-climate-uphill-challenge \nOur organizations are all about celebrating our winter landscape and helping people connect with our watershed\, as well as one another. This event is not only about who can climb the most peaks\, log the most miles\, or get up the mountain the fastest. It is about creating community. \nAs a result\, we will be recognizing participants in a range of categories that celebrate community\, fun\, and creativity. We will recognize January participants at our January 31st Uphill Race. Keep an eye out for more about the February and March fundraising efforts\, as well as the Feb 28 uphill race and the March 28 uphill rally. \nPlease remember\, we are able to host this fundraising event with the support of Sugarbush and Mad River Glen. It is vital that we all are good stewards of these mountains and follow each mountain’s uphill policies! Easily found on their websites – please check the snow reports every time you go.

SUMMARY:MRVBC / NOLS Wilderness First Aid
DESCRIPTION:Prepare for the unexpected with this fun\, hands-on introduction to wilderness medicine. If you like to take short trips relatively close to medical resources\, enjoy weekend family outdoor activities\, or recreate outdoors\, this course is for you. \nYou’ll learn the Patient Assessment System\, how to provide effective first aid treatments for injuries and illnesses common in the outdoors\, how to manage environmental emergencies\, and how to make appropriate evacuation decisions. You will spend half your time practicing skills and participating in realistic scenarios. \nNOLS Wilderness Medicine’s WFA course is approved by such organizations as the American Camp Association\, the United States Coast Guard\, as well as other state and federal agencies. \nThe class format involves lectures integrated with practical scenarios\, case studies\, and skills practice sessions. Attendance is required at all classes. \nScenarios and practice sessions will take place both inside and outside. Bring outdoor clothing appropriate for lying on the potentially wet\, snowy\, or cold ground while playing the role of both rescuer and patient. Stage (moulage) blood and make-up are used to enhance the realism of a scenario. The classroom environment generally lends itself to a pair of indoor comfy shoes.

SUMMARY:MRVBC Fall Trail Work Day
DESCRIPTION:The new tools are here\, the new tools are here!\nJust in time for Trail Work Day – Sunday Oct 13 \nThe Mad River Valley is extremely fortunate to have access to one of the most incredible backcountry recreation opportunities in Vermont – the Phen Basin. As a chapter of the Catamount Trail Association\, MRVBC has committed to the care and management of access to this resource by adopting section 19S from the Battleground condominiums north to the Long Trail in Huntington Gap. This commitment includes organizing an annual Fall Trail Work day where volunteers have an opportunity to help ensure continued access by working to maintain the trail and its features. And just in time\, your membership dollars at work\, we have a suite of new tools to make light work (dare we say\, fun??!!) of clearing those ankle grabbers and pow line interrupters.\nWith several bridges\, a consistent slope\, unique natural features\, and beautiful views\, this section provides excellent access for non-motorized wintertime use. Come explore the trail while helping to keep it in good shape. This year work will focus on simple sight line clearing\, blazing\, and lopper work higher up the trail. If this is of interest – please bring your best yard-sale\, animal encounter\, or dawn patrol story and join us! You will hear great stories and intel from Trail Chief Alan Hammersmith and Board Secretary Kevin Russell (one of THE most knowledgeable folks in the Valley when it comes to our natural and trail spaces). There will no doubt be some post work trail side merriment as well!\nPlease visit the MRVBC.org event page for contact information. We ask that you register to let us know you are coming!\nAlso\, please consider other Catamount Trail Association trail work days! \n\n2024 Trail Work Schedule \n\nIf you enjoy working in the woods and have some time to spare\, please join the Valley’s Catamount Trail Assn Trail Chiefs in the their annual effort to clear the Catamount Trail of blow-downs\, branches\, and brush. \nThings You’ll Need\nYou’ll need lunch\, water\, long pants\, layers\, work gloves\, hiking boots\, an orange hunting vest or similar during hunting season\, and a pair of loppers or handsaw. Bring a friend\, give back to the trails you enjoy\, and help CTA provide trail users with great experiences this winter.
