DESCRIPTION:In the Mad River Valley\, we believe that everyone — whether they live here\, work here\, or visit — deserves to feel safe. To support that vision the chamber’s is launching a new series of Stand Up for Safety workshops designed to help hospitality workers recognize and respond to situations that may threaten the safety or well-being of themselves\, their co-workers\, or their guests. \nThese interactive sessions will equip front-line staff with practical tools to: \n\nRecognize signs of harm\, harassment\, or exploitation\nRespond appropriately and safely when concerns arise\nConnect individuals in need with the right support services\n\nThe workshops are approachable\, hands-on\, and rooted in real-world hospitality settings — from restaurants and inns to shops and recreation businesses. While the curriculum is still being finalized\, the goal is clear: to ensure the Mad River Valley remains a safe and welcoming place for all. SUMMARY:Green Valley Rally 2026
DESCRIPTION:For the fourth consecutive year the Mad River Valley town’s Green Up Committees are collaborating under the banner of the Green Valley Rally on Vermont’s annual Green Up Day. On May 2\, 2026  the Green Valley Rally will be the epicenter for all Green Up Day activities here in the MRV. It will take place at the Mad River Valley Welcome Center (at the corner of Routes 100 and 17) from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. People can stop by to pick up Green Up bags\, morning snacks\, and roadside assignments. People will also have the chance to learn more about our partnering organizations such as the Friends of the Mad River\, stewardMRV\, Mad River Bear Inititative\, the Mad River Valley Chamber of Commerce\, the Mad RIver Riders\, the Mad River Path\, valley conservation and knotweed eradication programs\, and other stewardship organizations. \nGREEN UP DAY BOTTLE DRIVE\nOrganizers are  asking all Green Up Day volunteers to separate clean(ish) refundable cans found along the roadsides this year. They will provide separate clear bags for these cans and ask that people bring the bags back to the Welcome Center. Funds raised from redeemed the cans are donated to the Mad River Valley Interfaith Council\, which serves neighbors in need. \nMEET THE STEWARDSHIP PARTNERS\nStarting at noon and running through 2 p.m. there will be a BBQ from noon to 2 p.m. for Green Up Day and stewardMRV volunteers. During that time there will also be a stewardMRV volunteer job fair. People can learn more about other conservation and stewardship opportunities. Representatives from various local organizations involved in stewardship in The Valley will be on hand to share information about volunteer opportunities. Those interested can look into becoming a stewardMRV site steward\, a Friends of the Mad River Watch volunteer\, a Mad River Path volunteer or even help out with the Mad River Valley Recreation District. \nTIRE RECYCLING\nThe Mad River Resource Management Alliance (MRRMA) is collecting tires at the Earthwise Transfer Station on Green Up Day from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Those who find a tire along a roadside can bring it to the transfer station for recycling free of charge. To recycle personal tires\, the MRRMA will process those (with or without rims) for $5 each. \nVOLUNTEER BBQ\nThere will be a BBQ for all Green Up day volunteers to come celebrate our collective efforts. The grill will be lit starting at noon! The John Lackard Blues Band will be playing for the entertainment of our volunteers. Thanks to Afterthoughts and Valley Meade Dispensary for sponsoring the live music! \n \nJoin us for the Bear Fair! \n\nBEAR FAIR\nA fun and informative community event focused on how we can better coexist with black bears here in the Mad River Valley. The fair will feature five interactive “stations” highlighting common bear–human interactions and practical steps you can take to reduce conflicts at home and around your business. Explore topics like securing trash\, managing compost\, removing bird feeders\, and using electrification to protect property—all presented in an approachable\, hands-on way. Four stations will be set up in the Cousins Beer Garden area\, with a fifth hosted at the Mad River Valley Chamber Visitor Center. Inside the Visitor Center\, attendees can drop in to watch “Living with Bears” video presentation by Vermont Fish & Wildlife bear biologist Jaclyn Comeau\, running on a continuous loop. Stop by anytime to learn more\, ask questions\, and leave better prepared to live responsibly alongside one of Vermont’s most iconic wild neighbors. \n \nMeet me at Afterthoughts! \n\nKENTUCKY DERBY HAT PARTY & APRES GREEN UP DAY AT AFTERTHOUGHTS\nGreen Up Day always coincides with the Kentucky Derby so Afterthoughts decided to host an Apres-Green Up Day Kentucky Derby party with a build your own Kentucky Derby hat contest. Traditional inns\, hotels\, and lodges have gradually declined\, while short-term rentals (STRs) now make up a significant portion of the Valley’s visitor bed base. \nAt the same time\, municipalities are actively discussing housing pressures\, STR regulations\, and how to balance tourism with community needs. These shifts have created both opportunities and tensions\, and it’s more important than ever that the STR sector engages constructively in shaping the Valley’s visitor economy. \nThe Mad River Valley Chamber of Commerce is convening an initial meeting to begin building a collaborative table for dialogue and action. \nWhy This Conversation Matters\nFor decades\, traditional lodging properties carried much of the responsibility for promoting the Valley as a visitor destination. To support that vision the chamber’s is launching a new series of Stand Up for Safety workshops designed to help hospitality workers recognize and respond to situations that may threaten the safety or well-being of themselves\, their co-workers\, or their guests. \nThese interactive sessions will equip front-line staff with practical tools to: \n\nRecognize signs of harm\, harassment\, or exploitation\nRespond appropriately and safely when concerns arise\nConnect individuals in need with the right support services\n\nThe workshops are approachable\, hands-on\, and rooted in real-world hospitality settings — from restaurants and inns to shops and recreation businesses. While the curriculum is still being finalized\, the goal is clear: to ensure the Mad River Valley remains a safe and welcoming place for all. SUMMARY:Memory Tree Lighting Ceremony
DESCRIPTION:The Mad River Valley Memory Tree provides a way for community members to remember and honor a loved one\, event\, or anything close to your hearts and support a great cause too. At the tree lighting ceremony the bulb dedications are read. Each light dedication costs $5 with donations matched by the Winthrop H. Smith Jr. Family Foundation. All funds raised from the Memory Tree initiative are donated to the stewardMRV program that works to steward the MRV’s outdoor recreational access point. \nThe Mad River Valley Memory Tree has long been a highlight to the annual illumination of the valley. It began as a fundraising project of the Mad River Valley Lions Club back in the 1970’s. \nThe original concept was borrowed from the Saint Johnsbury Lions Club. Each year they would hold a tree lighting ceremony on a Friday in December just after dark where they would read the names of those who bought bulbs and for whom. After the Lions Club disbanded the Memory Tree tradition went away until Joan Wilson\, John Gallagher and Nancy and Jess Mobley revived the idea in 2013. That outreach has sparked a positive\, ongoing dialogue with the Vermont Department of Public Safety – Division of Fire Safety\, and this roundtable represents the next step in building an ethos of openness\, understanding\, and shared commitment to public safety. \nRoundtable\nAn engaging and practical conversation about fire codes\, inspections\, and best practices for keeping people and properties safe. \nAttendees:\nMichael Desrochers\, Executive Director of the Division of Fire Safety\nLandon A Wheeler\, Deputy Director of Department of Public Safety-Division of Fire Safety\nBenjamin Moffatt\, Department of Public Safety \nWhat to Expect\nThe session will include a brief presentation followed by open Q&A allowing participants to raise real-world questions and concerns. The MRV CARES Stand Up for Safety workshops are designed to help hospitality workers recognize and respond to situations that may threaten the safety or well-being of themselves\, their co-workers\, or guests. \nThrough these interactive sessions\, participants will gain tools and awareness to: \n\n\nRecognize the signs of potential harm\, harassment\, or exploitation. \n\n\nRespond appropriately and safely when concerns arise. \n\n\nConnect those in need with the right support services. \n\n\nThe training is practical\, approachable\, and rooted in real-world hospitality settings — from restaurants and inns to shops and recreation businesses. While the curriculum is still being finalized\, the goal is clear: to equip front-line staff with the confidence and knowledge to help keep the Mad River Valley a safe and welcoming place for everyone. \nWorkshop Details\nOctober 22-  10-11 am : GBV Bystander Training \nLearn the basics of gender-based violence bystander training. You will learn the 4D’s in bystander prevention and how you can empower yourself and others to stand up and make a difference in the lives of your co-workers and customers. \nJanuary 7 – 10-11 am: Understanding DV\, HT\, and Stalking \nThis month we will dive into various forms of gender-based violence: domestic violence\, human trafficking\, and stalking. We will look at how these crimes can be identified in customers and also with your coworkers and learn how to respond with compassion and action. We will also identify local and national resources. \nApril 1 – 10-11 am: Sexual Assault Awareness Month \nIn this session learn about the various forms of sexual assault and how we can stand up during Sexual Assault Awareness Month and all year long.
