DESCRIPTION:For the second consecutive year the Mad River Valley towns Green Up Committees are collaborating to make the most of the effort. They are coordinating their efforts under the banner of the Mad River Valley Green Valley Rally. \nVermont’s annual Green Up Day takes place on Saturday\,May 4\, 2024 with the Green Valley Rally being the epicenter for all activities here in the MRV. It will take place at the Mad River Valley Chamber of Commerce Welcome Center (at the corner of Routes 100 and 17) from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. People can stop by to pick up Green Up bags\, morning snacks\, and roadside assignments. People will also have the chance to learn more about volunteer opportunities with the Friends of the Mad River\, stewardMRV\, and Valley knotweed eradication programs. \nEvent Timeline \n\n8 – 10 am             Bag Pick-up & Breakfast Treats\n8 am -2 pm         Can and Bottle Drop Off (see deets below)\nNoon to 2 pm    MRV Steward Organizations Volunteer Job Fair|\nNoon to 2 pm     BBQ for Green Up Day Volunteers\nBag Drop Offs     Bring Your Green Bags to Earthwise Santiation’s Waitsfield Transfer Station. They will provide separate clear bags for these cans and ask that people bring the bags back to the Welcome Center. They can also bring refundable cans and bottles back to the tent. Organizers will redeem the cans and donate all funds to the Mad River Valley Interfaith Council\, which serves neighbors in need. \nVOLUNTEER JOB FAIR\nStarting at noon and running through 2 p.m. there will be a BBQ for Green Up Day and stewardMRV volunteers. During that time there will also be a stewardMRV volunteer job fair. People can learn more about other conservation and stewardship opportunities. Representatives from various local organizations involved in stewardship in The Valley will be on hand to share information about volunteer opportunities. Those interested can look into becoming a stewardMRV site steward\, a Friends of the Mad River Watch volunteer\, a Mad River Path volunteer or even help out with the Mad River Valley Recreation District. \nWasted Portalet Demo\nCheck out the new Wasted portalets that will be used at stewardMRV sites around the MRV this year. There will also be a sample of the Wasted Off-Grid toilets we will be testing out this season. \nTIRE RECYCLING\nThe Mad River Resource Management Alliance (MRRMA) is collecting tires at the Earthwise Transfer Station on Green Up Day from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Those who find a tire along a roadside can bring it to the transfer station for recycling free of charge. To recycle personal tires\, the MRRMA will process those (with or without rims) for $5 each. \nVOLUNTEER BBQ\nThere will be a BBQ for all Green Up day volunteers to come celebrate our collective efforts. SUMMARY:Allen Clark Memorial Hill Climb
DESCRIPTION:The Allen Clark Memorial Hill Climb — the annual grunt-fest that has fast become a rite of cycling passage in the Mad River Valley — is a grueling time trial that rises 1\,600 vertical feet in 6.2 miles\, from the intersection of Routes 100 and 17 to the top of Appalachian Gap. \nThe event is named in honor of long-time Mad River Valley resident\, Allen Clark. An avid cyclist who took up biking late in life\, he rode 2\,500-3\,000 annually in Vermont. Allen especially loved the challenge of the Appalachian Gap. This event is a tribute to Allen’s life and a fundraiser for Vermont Adaptive Ski & Sports\, an organization that meant a great deal to him. \nThe cost to register is $50 for adults and $30 for kids. \nBikers are encouraged to pre-register in advance of the event by clicking here \nRace-day registration will take place from 8:30-9:30AM in front of Stark Mountain Bike Works. A $10 surcharge per entry will be added to all day-of registrations. The road wasn’t constructed using the high-tech survey methods available today; instead\, the bed was laid out following the natural contours of the terrain. With an average pitch of roughly 10 percent over the last 2½ miles\, the climb is steeper (if shorter) than most climbs in the Tour de France. But steepness alone isn’t everything. The numerous changes in pitch and direction are really what make the App Gap climb a challenging and exhilarating ride\, both physically and mentally. \nWho Can Participate?\nCyclists and Unicyclists of all ages and abilities with any type of bicycle are invited to tackle the challenge of racing to the top of the Appalachian Gap. In keeping with the spirit of its namesake\, the late Allen Clark\, the Hill Climb is a celebration of cycling as a sport for people of all ages and physical abilities\, with any type of bicycle. Clark was a Mad River Valley cycling enthusiast and a regular bike-shop customer who didn’t take up the sport until he was in his sixties. He went on to log between 2\,000 and 3\,500 miles a year\, well into his 70s\, riding in all weather and in every month of the year. His favorite bike was a Bianchi hybrid\, fully rigged with racks and a huge storage trunk. The bike weighed more than 40 pounds — more than twice the weight of a typical racing bike. \nThe Ap Gap climb was one of Clark’s favorite rides\, as it is for almost every cyclist in the Mad River Valley. The climb can be difficult and even downright painful\, but getting to the top is always extraordinarily rewarding. Regardless of what level rider you might be\, riding the Gap is the ultimate fitness reality check. That’s why local riders come back to the Gap again and again\, in a kind of love/hate relationship. \nCategories\nPrizes will be awarded for both men and women\, 15 years and over. It will take place at the Mad River Valley Welcome Center (at the corner of Routes 100 and 17) from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. People can stop by to pick up Green Up bags\, morning snacks\, and roadside assignments. People will also have the chance to learn more about volunteer opportunities with the Friends of the Mad River\, stewardMRV\, and Valley conservation and knotweed eradication programs\, and other stewardship organizations. \nGREEN UP DAY BOTTLE DRIVE\nOrganizers are  asking all Green Up Day volunteers to separate clean(ish) refundable cans found along the roadsides this year. They will provide separate clear bags for these cans and ask that people bring the bags back to the Welcome Center. Funds raised from redeemed the cans are donated to the Mad River Valley Interfaith Council\, which serves neighbors in need. \nVOLUNTEER JOB FAIR\nStarting at noon and running through 2 p.m. there will be a BBQ from noon to 2 p.m. for Green Up Day and stewardMRV volunteers. During that time there will also be a stewardMRV volunteer job fair. People can learn more about other conservation and stewardship opportunities. Representatives from various local organizations involved in stewardship in The Valley will be on hand to share information about volunteer opportunities. Those interested can look into becoming a stewardMRV site steward\, a Friends of the Mad River Watch volunteer\, a Mad River Path volunteer or even help out with the Mad River Valley Recreation District. \nTIRE RECYCLING\nThe Mad River Resource Management Alliance (MRRMA) is collecting tires at the Earthwise Transfer Station on Green Up Day from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Those who find a tire along a roadside can bring it to the transfer station for recycling free of charge. To recycle personal tires\, the MRRMA will process those (with or without rims) for $5 each. \nVOLUNTEER BBQ\nThere will be a BBQ for all Green Up day volunteers to come celebrate our collective efforts. The grill will be lit starting at noon! The John Packard Blues Band will be playing for the entertainment of our volunteers. DESCRIPTION:Sunday October 5\, 2025\nThe Allen Clark Memorial Hill Climb — the annual grunt-fest that has fast become a rite of cycling passage in the Mad River Valley — is a grueling time trial that rises 1\,600 vertical feet in 6.2 miles\, from the intersection of Routes 100 and 17 to the top of Appalachian Gap. \nThe event is named in honor of long-time Mad River Valley resident\, Allen Clark. An avid cyclist who took up biking late in life\, he rode 2\,500-3\,000 annually in Vermont. Allen especially loved the challenge of the Appalachian Gap. This event is a tribute to Allen’s life and a fundraiser for Vermont Adaptive Ski & Sports\, an organization that meant a great deal to him. \nThe cost to register is $50 for adults and $30 for kids. \nBikers are encouraged to pre-register in advance of the event by clicking here \nRace-day registration will take place from 8:30-9:30AM in front of Stark Mountain Bike Works. You will learn the 4D’s in bystander prevention and how you can empower yourself and others to stand up and make a difference in the lives of your co-workers and customers. \nJanuary 7th: Understanding DV\, HT\, and Stalking \nThis month we will dive into various forms of gender-based violence: domestic violence\, human trafficking\, and stalking. We will look at how these crimes can be identified in customers and also with your coworkers and learn how to respond with compassion and action. We will also identify local and national resources. \nApril 1st: Sexual Assault Awareness Month \nIn this session learn about the various forms of sexual assault and how we can stand up during Sexual Assault Awareness Month and all year long. We will identify how to recognize the signs that may lead up to sexual assault as well as how to respond if someone discloses to you. We will also identify local and national resources. \nAugust 5th: Workplace Culture \nCreating a supportive culture in the workplace takes leadership and response from all members. This session examines how we can effectively lead and create a supportive place for all. To support that vision the chamber’s is launching a new series of Stand Up for Safety workshops designed to help hospitality workers recognize and respond to situations that may threaten the safety or well-being of themselves\, their co-workers\, or their guests. \nThese interactive sessions will equip front-line staff with practical tools to: \n\nRecognize signs of harm\, harassment\, or exploitation\nRespond appropriately and safely when concerns arise\nConnect individuals in need with the right support services\n\nThe workshops are approachable\, hands-on\, and rooted in real-world hospitality settings — from restaurants and inns to shops and recreation businesses. While the curriculum is still being finalized\, the goal is clear: to ensure the Mad River Valley remains a safe and welcoming place for all.
