SUMMARY:Collaborative Design/Build Intensive
DESCRIPTION:Yestermorrow’s work is rooted in an integrated design/build philosophy. We believe that combining design and building offers numerous advantages and promotes the creation of intentional and inspired buildings and communities that enhance our world. Led by founding members of the legendary Jersey Devil Design/Build group and renowned architect Bill Bialosky\, this course is the embodiment of the design/build process. \nThis 2 week crash course teaches students critical skills in both facilitating consensus based design and fundamental carpentry skills. Students engage in a collaborative and interactive process of designing and building a full scale community project. Students will meet with the non-profit or community client\, establish the program\, work within a budget\, propose and develop the design all in just 3 days. Following design approval\, we’ll head to the job site to execute the design. \nThroughout the program students will experience the design/build feedback loop as they gain fundamental carpentry skills while also learning how to adapt existing plans to current conditions. Your creative thinking and problem solving skills will be put to the test! \nThis class is a great fit for people interested in community development\, change making\, architecture\, small scale building and collaborative design.\nThis course is open to architects and builders seeking to earn continuing education credit\, as well as to students\, non-professionals\, and anyone with enthusiasm about design/build and giving back to the public realm. Previous construction experience is not required. However\, a willingness to try is expected!

This ambitious project has the potential to conserve landscapes\, connect communities\, build economies\, and create an incredible recreational resource. This is the Velomont. The Velomont invites people on bikes\, skis\, and foot to one day explore 485 miles of trail which will connect 30-45 backcountry huts & downtown hostels and 27 communities\, potentially conserving over 200\,000 acres of crucial wildlife corridor. When complete\, the Velomont will represent the largest hut-supported trail network in the United\nStates – and the public can already enjoy select huts connected by new trail segments.

DESCRIPTION:Build your own hardwood edge-grain cutting board or charcuterie board from start to finish! In this class you will gain experience with the table saw\, jointer\, and planer to prepare the components of your cutting board. \nThis course will take place in 2 evening sessions on Tuesday November 12 and Thursday November 14 from 6-9pm. \nIn the first session\, we’ll then learn how to properly glue those pieces together into a rough panel. In session two\, we will trim and shape those boards\, use the router table to add customized edge details\, and sand and oil the boards. Free and open to the public. \nNet-Zero Retrofit and High Performance Expansion of a 1782 Vermont Farmhouse with Brian Cali \nWhen 20 year old Revolutionary War veteran Moses Chaplin first built the timber frame structure that will be the topic of this talk\, achieving net-zero energy and reducing embodied carbon were most certainly not part of the planning. In the 2020s\, these goals were front and center during the work to retrofit the original house and expand to allow for single story living and meet other programming goals of the next stewards of this property. Owner Brian Cali will provide an overview of the journey to this project (spoiler alert: Yestermorrow played a key role!)\, the major design elements\, and the process of retrofitting the original building and strategies employed for the addition (which utilized off-site construction).

SUMMARY:How Low Can We Go? – Modern Airtightness Targets in Multifamily Housing with Nate Gusakov\, Green Mountain Enclosure Consulting\, LLC. (Yestermorrow Fall Speaker Series)
DESCRIPTION:Driven by code\, available incentives\, and forward-thinking design teams\, many of the recent or upcoming large multifamily new construction projects in Vermont are targeting (and usually achieving) airtightness levels that approach those of certified PHIUS buildings. Using examples from local case studies\, this presentation gives an overview of the current journey towards ultra-airtightness in large buildings including challenges\, lessons learned\, and thoughts on the future. \nFall Speaker Series: Innovative Homes\nThis talk is presented as part of our Fall 2025 Speaker Series. All talks are free and open to the public\, and take place Wednesday evenings from 6:30 – 8 pm. This Fall we are tackling part two of our “Innovative Homes” series\, this time focusing in on multi-family homes. We’ll discuss different ways cities and towns are approaching sustainable housing development and affordability through case studies of unique living spaces.

SUMMARY:The Marsh House Apartments: Neighborhood Infill and Community-Centered Design with Nicola Anderson\, Downstreet Housing and Community Development (Yestermorrow Fall Speaker Series)
DESCRIPTION:Marsh House Apartments\, a three-story building offering 26 energy-efficient\, permanently affordable homes\, is currently under construction and Ideally located in the heart of downtown Waterbury\, VT. Among these\, three apartments are designated for individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities\, and five will be reserved for those experiencing or at risk of homelessness. This new housing community is within walking distance of key services\, amenities\, and public transportation. The project also targets the Efficiency Vermont High-Performance energy standard\, and the building will include a rooftop solar array. \nJoin Nicola Anderson from Downstreet to learn about the design and development process\, how community input influenced the process\, and strategies for resilient and appropriate neighborhood infill. \nThis talk is presented as part of our Fall 2025 Speaker Series. DESCRIPTION:One of the pioneers of the Prickly Mountain design/build movement\, architect Jim Sanford will give a presentation on the construction of the Dimetrodon\, a truly unique example of multifamily housing. Jim will discuss how the design/build process influenced the final building\, why the architects felt it important to prioritize multifamily living\, and what they would or would not do again. Go under the hood of one of Vermont’s most iconic residential buildings from the perspective of its original designers\, builders\, and inhabitants. \nThis talk is presented as part of our Fall 2025 Speaker Series.
